Questions to aks when interviewing a pediatrician...

Hey ladies, I was wondering what would be some good questions to ask when interviewing a pediatrician. This is our first so we are brand new to this, and really don't know where to start with the pediatrician. I really don't just want to pick one at random. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

    I haven't started interview pediatricians yet but a friend told me that when she picked her pediatrician they told them they would not accept patients who refused vaccines.  Other things I've though of are:

    -Do they have a separate well/sick waiting rooms

    -Flexible office hours; after hours communication

    -Do they have strong views on breastfeeding vs. bottle 

    -Which hospitals are they affiliated with

    -Do they have PA's, NP's on staff

     

    Those are just a few things I can think of.   Good luck!

    Like PP I googled and pick and choose from several lists that I found online. The main questions that I got the most information for me was about circumcision (since Im having a boy) and immunizations. His opinion on BF vs FF was important as well, I cannot BF and have meet a few peds that havent been to nice to me because of this fact, so I finally found a supportive doc.

    Go online and google. and GL with the drs!

    Also, if you want to BF, make sure your pedi is supportive. They all say they are, but some push formula at the first sign of a problem, instead of trying to help you resolve the problem. If its a strong desire of yours, I would consider asking those questions.

    I am old school, and I try not to give antibiotics unless absolutely necessary, and so far (18 months) DS had had them once. I treated eye infections and a rash with breast milk under the supervision of my pedi, and DS has been incredibly healthy. I just look for a pedi who is ok with what I personally believe, I guess that's what I'm trying to say.

    Thanks. I do plan on BF as long as I'm capable to do so, If I can't then I will FF. I do need a doctor who will support that decision. Thanks for the insite. I didn't realize pedis would act differently towards you if you decided to feed your baby one way and not the other. I believe that you should do what you feel is right for your baby in your eyes. If you want to BF you should if you want to FF then you should, as long as whatever you choose is not hurting your baby.

    One thing that i ran into with my pedi with my daughter (lurking from 12-24m), is how comfortable are they with medical issues? For example, My pedi was newer and she was part time because of her husband was in Iraq, and she also had a daughter. Well, my daughter was born and had a heart deftect, so, for awhile, she required special treatment with vacs and things, bc she was in and out of hospitals for 2 months out of her new life. And my doc didn't realy know what to do. When we had any kind of questions or anything regarding my daughters health. As far as weight, intake or anything! Drove me nuts! She ALWAYS had to call us back because she had to find out from others. And when she was a bit older, and cleared medically, she and I went round and round about a certain shot my daughter didn't really need. But she didn't know she didn't need it because she couldn't remember my daughter's history! It was awful!  Experience is such an importance! You need someone that is going to know what to do in case of something like this! GL in you search!
