not a stupid question. When we did sleep training we started with bedtime and still rocked before naps. Once bedtime was a consistent success we tackled nap time. Personally, I wouldn't wait too long in between because I wouldn't want to send mixed messages.
I didn't do "sleep training" but when I did start getting Ben to fall asleep on his own (wayyyyy older than your baby, so this might not apply), I only did it for night time. Then once it was really established for night time, I talked to him about doing it for nap time and we made the change for naps too.
SJ, how old was Ben when you worked on getting to fall asleep alone? Still trying to convince the hubby there are alternatives...
about 17 months I think. and although the time from 12-17 months was tough, he has no sleep issues now at all. Goes to bed easily - sometimes some monkey business about needing to tell us "one more thing" but he sleeps all night and I've never had to do any "retraining" or anything. He started STTN after his pointy teeth came in. Coincidence? maybe. But his bad sleep started when his first teeth came in and ended when he was done. So...
There is no one right solution for sleep, despite what every sleep book says. You're not wrecking them as long as they're not miserable and sleep deprived. what works is really different for every kid and every family. And really at some point all of the sleep stuff is a distant memory and you survive. and then you're stupid and have another baby and you get to do it again!!

Good luck!
