Babies: 3 - 6 Months

For those of you who exclusively pump. I have a question.

DS only takes a bottle once a week, when I go to school and DH puts him to bed. Since I have to pump in between feedings, I usually only get 2-3oz max and that is what he drinks on the nights I can't BF him. I am going on a weekend cruise on the 29th (Fri morning-Mon morning).

My question is how many ounces do you ladies think I should have pumped for him? How many do you think he will drink during the day?? Tongue Tied

ETA: He usually gets BF when he wakes up (7-8am), before his second nap (12pm-2pm), sometime before his dinner (4-5pm), before bed (6:30-7:30pm), & once during the night. So in total during the day 4-5 times.  I already started pumping every night, so I can hopefully have enough.

  • kellymom has some good information about this:

    https://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkcalc.html

My DS nurses when he wakes up at 7, after his evening nap at home at around 5:45/6 and sometimes overnight.  He takes four 5.5 or 6 oz bottles of BM during the day.  But I think he eats a lot compared to other babies.

  • I would estimate his weight time ...crap I think it's 2.5 oz? I'm sure someone on here knows. It's the avg LO should eat up to 32 oz

  • Breastfed babies average 25-30 oz  a day give or take. If I were gone for 3 days I personally would leave about 100 oz. I don't know exactly how you can build a stash up that quickly.

    Edit for wonky math.

  • Have you given any formula yet? If not it might be time to introduce it just in case you can't pump that much. You could also try taking fenugreek, its availabe at health food stores or vitamin stores. Mother's Milk tea can also be found in the tea aisle at Target and some supermarkets. Maybe you can up your supply that way?

How do I go about taking the fenugreek? Isn't there a specific way to take it?? I will go buy the tea tomorrow as well, I need to up my supply.. I tried to give him a little bit of formula once and he was not having it.

  • Also, instead of just pumping after the morning feed you can always pump on the other side while you are feeding. you will get a better let down that way. The downside to all this is that it will signal your body to make more milk. Meaning, you're going to have oversupply and when you go back to normal feedings you will likely deal with engorgement and leaking.

Also, what were you planning on doing while you are on the cruise? Are you going to pump and dump? I would take a manual pump in addition to an electric God forbid something happens.

    Here is some suggested dosage:

    https://www.kellymom.com/herbal/milksupply/fenugreek.html#dosage

Again, be careful because you'll likely spend your whole cruise pumping and leaking if you increase your supply too much. I would try mixing the formula with BM about 25% formula and 75% BM at first, then you can go 50/50 and stretch your milk longer.

Yes, I am going to pump and dump..  I don't mind having an oversupply because eventually it will even out again. I rather have more than not enough.

Start out slow on Formula. Try mixing  1oz premade formula with 2oz BM, and slowly up the amount of Formula as days goes by and pretty soon he'll take either BM or Formula without any hesitation.
