1st Trimester

10 weeks pregnant and question about missed miscarriage

I am 10 weeks today, I don't go for my first prenatal for 2 more weeks, I will be 12 weeks. At 6 weeks I had one incident of light bleeding/spotting, no cramps and only happened that one incident. Shortly after that I felt my pregnancy symptoms seemed to stop (I wasn't even having all that many... slightly sore, full breasts, tired, mild cramping from uterus expanding and that was about it).

Over that last 2 weeks I have noticed new symptoms. If I had a missed miscarriage, would I start to have an increase in symptoms? I know your body thinks you are still pregnant with a missed miscarriage. I went from feeling my symptoms had backed off to progressively getting new ones... None are all the intense though.

Any feedback would be helpful. I know only an U/S can confirm that, but any advice would be appreciated.

Re: 10 weeks pregnant and question about missed miscarriage

  • You answered your own question... there is no way to know without and u/s... symptoms are completely unrelated to the health of the baby... they are your bodies reaction to the hormones....

  • Symptoms will come and go, just like you described. There is nothing abnormal about that, but there is nothing other than an u/s that can calm the fear of a missed m/c. It is very stressful, but you just have to try and be patient. I had my first apt and u/s at 6w5d. I think if my Dr. didn't want to get me in until week 12, I would have found one who would.
  • The symptoms are no indication.  I had a missed m/c at about 5-6 weeks and I still had symptoms for weeks before my body finally caught on to the fact that the pregnancy was not viable.... so symptoms or lack there of don't mean anything.

  • Like PPs say...your symptoms will come and go.  Two weeks ago I was back to feeling normal again and then this week completely different symptoms and a whole other type of nauseousness.  If you are that concnerned, I would call.  I know with my first pregnancy I had severe cramping and I called medical advice.  Even though I wasn't bleeding, they instructed me to just go into the urgent care to be checked out because everything they told me to do, didn't ease it up over night.  They ended up just doing a quick ultrasound and checked the heartbeat to make sure all was ok.

  • Just out of curiosity-  does anyone know the actual percentages of missed miscarriages that occur? I was under the impression that the majority of miscarriages were not missed, and that was an anamoly.

I would be curious to know this, too... I've been fearing a missed miscarriage since I haven't had any symptoms lately, other than some mild cramping, but no spotting or bleeding. I can't help but always think the worst. :(

  • My Dr. said the ONLY indication of a miscarriage is bleeding.  When I miscarried I bleed and did not stop bleeding for 7 days.  If you are truly worried, call the Dr. she will fit you in.

  • first let me say i think your totally fine- or normal- symptoms come and go. however with all that said as the other posters mentioned only an u/s can confirm. I miscarried without bleeding this past fall!! I had NO idea. no cramping no bleeding nothing. went for my ultra sound and found out. i iknow that is not re-assuring but it is what happend and does/can occur. however please dont take that as negative b/c i have 2 beautiful little girls who i had pregnancies with and without symptoms..so its really hard to know without the u/s, best of luck!!! i hope everything goes well..and i should also tell you that i have bled on and off this entire 1st tri and i would have guessed i m/c..but i have had 3-4 u/s and all look great.. so you just never know.

This is not true.  Before having my DD, I had a miscarriage without any symptoms.  I went in for my 12 week u/s and they said the baby had stopped growing about 2 weeks prior.  I had no spotting or bleeding.  It ended in a D&C.

She meant the only physical symptom.  Not that you HAVE to have a symptom to miscarry.  She was explaining that cramping, backache, etc. can be normal, even some spotting.

Edited to clarify:  she also did not mean that bleeding means you will have a miscarriage- just that it is the only physical symptom that could indicate a threatened miscarriage.

  • My symptoms (I'm 10 weeks) have come and gone also. I'm pretty sure that's normal.

I actually had a missed m/c about 6 years ago. I think I was 8 weeks and it happened around 5 or 6 and my body didn't register it for a couple weeks. Afterwards I realized my symptoms had mostly disappeared, although I don't think that happens every time. But like you, I've been nervous this entire pregnancy, despite seeing the hb on u/s a few weeks ago.

I wouldn't worry about your light spotting, it's pretty common (happened to me too). I feel like missed m/c gets talked about on here alot, probably more so not because it's common but because so many ladies worry about it. It's hard not to worry when your symptoms aren't very strong, but try to relax cuz chances are you are just fine :)

  • With my miscarriage never had any waning of symptoms, so you never know until confirmed by your OB or DR.

  • melaniejky: Thanks for your response. I was comforted to hear from someone who had one and who is now at the same stage I am in. You seemed to understand why I fear and you bring up a great point about how it seems to be a common topic only because the fear of it, not because it is so common. I appreciate it!
