XP: those who use nipple shields...

How long should LO use this? She does very well with it and I have periodically tried getting her to latch without it and no luck. Is there a time when I should really try and wean her? TIA!

  • I am curious about this too.  Every time I go for an appointment my doctor asks if we are still using the shield.  I try during the day to do a couple feeds with out it.  And it works most of the time.  Anytime she is sleepy or lazy - but hungry - she gets lazy with the latch.  I figure it doesn't hurt to use it as long as my supply is good.  Though when visiting family it has been a PITA to get the darn thing on and then BF under a blanket.

  • Our pedi said she knew a lady who was unable to wean from the shield and used it for 18 mos. I hate the damn thing.. it works but I would feel so much better if we could feed w/o it.

  • I use it too, and so far, no luck with trying to wean from it. I'm going to keep trying, though... It's not going to work for us to keep using it forever.

  • I used one w/ DS but haven't needed on this time around.  I was unable to ween DS until around 3 months...he just couldn't get it.  I hated that stupid thing but it was like one day it just clicked!  I wouldn't stress too much about it...whatever works! lol

  • I used one with DD and am again.  With DD I was unable to wean her until three months.  I tried all the time, but she just wouldn't latch without it until she was ready.  This time around, I'm still attempting to feed without it periodically, but I'm not stressing.  I figure DS will latch himself when he's ready just like DD did.

  • I was told to try to get LO to latch without in the middle of a feeding and to keep trying at least once a day. I agree the shield is a PITA. LO latched on today without it. It took a couple of tries, but she did. I've done 3 feedings without it. She will be 5 weeks tomorrow.
