Anyone have protein in urine...

Apparently I did today at my appt. She checked my ankles and they weren't swollen. My BP has been normal also. She didn't say anything about the protein other than watching my BP and urine. I see her weekly now so I guess we'll check again next Thursday.

Anyways I don't know too much about protein in urine other than that combined with high BP can mean pre-eclampsia. I didn't think to ask her more questions.

Re: Anyone have protein in urine...

  • I did once which was attributed to being dehydrated since my urine was concentrated, no swelling and BP was fine.

  • I have had it for the last two appoinments.  Dr. thinks I am dehydrated but since I am a high school teacher and my prinicpal refuses to allow teachers bathroom breaks he pulled me from work.  His instructions were: I am to rest with my feet up for most of the day and drink plenty of liquids.  My feet swell but my fingers and face have not yet- BP is fine.

  • I had trace amounts during my 1st pregnancy {was diagnosed with PIH & monitored from 28wks on for Pre-E}. But I had high BP, extreme swelling to accompany it.

If you have no other symptoms, it could simply be your body warning you of a kidney infection or you could be trying to fight off an infection. I'd do like PP and would increase my water intake...likely it's nothing-hopefully it's nothing!

Me too. I had mild swelling that has since resolved, and BP is good so no worries.

I had traces in my urine last friday. It could be a warning sign for pre-e, but since your blood pressure is fine, I wouldn't worry about that.  The other causes for it could be dehydration or you just didn't get a "clean sample" - ie CM got in the sample or your urine got contaminated because it wasn't a mid-stream collection.

For me, I had to redo my urine sample this monday. No more protein, though my BP wasn't exaclty great so we are still monitoring for pre-E / PIH.

Do you know how much protein was found? They score it as trace, +1, +2, +3, etc.  My OB said that if it's just a trace, they don't do much about it.

  • I was thinking maybe my urine wasn't diluted enough? I could only give a little bit and it seemed pretty concentrated. I have been drinking alot of water-at least I thought I was. I will drink more though. I am also getting rid of a cold if that had anything to do with it.

  • This was my major problem in a kidney disease, but like PP said, it's one of the Pre-e red flags. If I remember right, it's something about the way your body absorbs the protein and if your kidneys don't suck it up then your body will basically react like it's having a salt overdose and start retaining ridiculous amounts of water (I carried 40lbs of water weight at the height of my illness). Hence, why she checked for swelling. They can also make your BP rise and when they start feeding off of each other it just snowballs. I think flutepharm had a problem with her protein count there at the end. You can also spill excess protein because of other random reasons like what you've eaten, exercise, etc.

Like she said, not really a big deal unless it's crazy high or in conjunction with high BP. Good luck!

  • I did at my last appt. I attributed it to the fact that I wasn't drinking as much the past few days because I had been feeling pretty crappy. Then he said my BP was high compared to my norm. My feet had been swelling for the past few weeks so he was concerned. He sent my urine sample for testing to check for bladder/kidney infection and told me to monitor my BP at home (my DH is a nurse) and call if it got to 140/xx. So far, so good but I get nervous when it's in the 130s and I don't go back till next Thursday so hoping I can hold out till then. Been really exhausted lately but that could be due to the fact that this child is extremely active and keeping me up at night. Also had shortness of breath about twice a day which can be attributed to the increased blood flow and the pressure/loss of space compressing on my lungs... thanks, kiddo! :) Hopefully we all feel better and have no problems since we're in the home stretch!

  • When protein showed up in my urine a few weeks ago the Dr. thought it was from a mild UTI. It hasn't showed up in my urine since so I assume all is well now

  • WOW!!!   Ladies!  If you have protein in your urine and your blood pressure is normal does NOT mean everything is fine!  I got diagnosed with pre-e and sometimes my blood pressure is fine, sometimes it is high!!  This is NOT an accurate way to diagnose pre-e!  The only way to know really is 24 hour urine collections and blood samples.  OP, please talk to your doctor about doing a 24 hour urine sample if they find protein in your urine again!  If you do have pre-e and it goes unrecognized; it can cause big problems very quickly if it escalates!

  • In trace ammounts it usually means you need to drink more water, flush those kidneys. Sometimes if you have a morning appt before you have consumed much fluids you may have some. In higher ammounts, esp combined with hypertension, headaches, vision changes, swelling is much more concerning. I work in an OB office and dip at least 50 urine samples a day and a lot of pregnant women have trace ammt of protein (small) - which drs never get too concerned over. Depends on how much and your overall exam.
