Trying to Get Pregnant

Does fertility run in the family?

Has it ever been figured out if getting pregnant easily or not is genetic?

There's 4 of us in my family, and none of us were planned.  My mom demonstated how different forms of BC fail (she was never on BCP) by showing me each and then saying: "and that's what we were using when we had _____" hahaha

Me and DH are starting to TTC in June, so I'll let you all know if it's as easy for me as for my mom ;) *fingers crossed!*

  • If it were genetic, I would have awesomely regular cycles and would be KU twice by now.

  • I don't think so.

My mom had 4 pregnancies and 4 live births.

I'm on my 5th pregnancy, and so far one live birth and one TBD.

Yes but I'd be going on #4.

  • aw! poor salt78! why does it seem like our moms had it so easy with this baby thing?

  • Nope. My mom got KU with my sister and I totally by accident. Hasn't been that easy for me.

  • On the other side of things, both my mom and I have had difficulties.
  • I don't think so either.

I am 1 of 6 children, my mom is 1 of 9 children, my dad is 1 of 5 children. If I had my parents or grand-parents fertility I am with Salt I should have been pregnant twice by now.

I hope you are lucky and get your parents gene's but I don't think it honestly makes any difference.

  • I'm going to go with no... maybe that is me just hoping I will have a much easier time than my mother.  Her doctors told her she couldn't have children, and then there was me and my little brother...the days before ultrasounds and such, who knows...

  • It is certainly not genetic... I wish though! My mom conceived three children (one set of twins) relatively easily from what I understand, and my twin sister conceived on her first cycle off of BC. I however am on my 7th month of trying, and only 4 cycles to show for it.

  • My mom had no problem at all. All 3 of and 1 miscarriage all on the first try. She was also 21 when she started having children. I am 32 and have been TTC for 8 cycles. The RE would like to start IUI due to egg quality next month ( I am choosing to wait until July). My sister is 30 and having a very hard time. She has had 2 failed IVFs.

  • I wish it was genetic!  My mom got pregnant so easily with myself and my siblings.  My sister has 2 kids, she got pregnant with the first after missing some BC pills, the second she tried for and it happened in the first month.  My youngest sister is currently pregnant and it was accidental, after missing the BC pill for a week.  I was hoping that I would get pregnant this easily too, but it looks like I may have to put a bit of work in to it!  Oh well! Good luck to you!
  • I don't think it's genetic.  For one thing I know my mom had a terrible time staying pregnant and I'm hoping it won't be that bad for me.  A good friend of mine got pregnant her third month of trying and I know her mother had to be on fertility drugs to get pregnant with all three of their kids.  She was very worried that it was going to be as difficult for her as it was for her mom but it was way easier for her to get pregnant.

  • I actually researched this a little last month after finding out my hubby's parents had trouble. From what I read it's not genetic, though conditions like Endo can be.

  • Not genetic at all. My mom had my brother and me with no problem at all. So easy in fact we are 11 months apart. She has 5 sisters as well and all had easy births - a boy and a girl each and only her one sister had to do IVF. I should say no one has PCOS either besides me.

    Married: 5/09 ~ TTC Since: 10/10 ~ PCOS ~ Progesterone from 10/10 - 2/11 ~ HSG on 3/18 - Clear ~ Started Metformin 1000mg & Clomid 50mg 2/11 ~ Metformin upped to 1500mg 4/6 ~ 6/7 Now going to SG and put on Clomid, Ovidrel, Gonal F, Prometrium, Estrace ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP!!!!!! March 6th our little man was born.

6/17/13 - Ovidrel, Follistim, Prometrium ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP! March 17th our St. Pattys day baby arrived

    10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

  • I think genetics play a limited role.  PCOS is often from an inherited gene.  Natural   twins/multiples are also genetic, as in some families have woman that tend to release more eggs each cycle or have eggs that tend to split after fertilization. Overall fertility doesn't seem to have a clear link.

  • No, I don't believe so at all. Even if it was genetic (hypothetically speaking) there are so many outside factors that can play a role in an individual's fertility....(from lifestyle, the the reproductive health of the man you're with, etc.)

  • For me, genetics is key. Endo runs in the family, and I was diagnosed with it when I was sixteen. We will see how big of a role it plays on us getting pregnant.

this is true for me as well. (the endometriosis)

in general, fertility itself is not genetic. But certainly some conditions that impact fertility can be genetic.

also, to add.....unless everyone here started trying at the exact same age as their mother and had sex on the same days, then you cant rely on your mother's history to disprove a genetic link. I'm not saying that one exists, just pointing out that bc your mother got pregnant easily and it's taking you longer == evidence that there is no link.

  • I am one of five children, my mom told me last week that she got KU the first month trying for all of us. She had a MC with her first pregnancy, but she got KU the first month every time. I'm sorry, but that is just crazy. Stick out tongue

I wanted to ask her if she charted, but she doesn't know my DH and I are TTC, so I figured that might give her a hint if I asked about that. Surprise

  • I am not sure about what is going on with my body right now, but I have it easier then my mother. She had several miscarriages before she got pregnant with my older brother (3 I believe). Then after my brother she had another one before she got pregnant with me. After me it took her about 2-3 years to get pregnant with my brother as she had secondary infertility and a very weak uterus (it fell out after my brother was born...yes fell out). My uterus has been strong through all my pregnancies, and I have only had 2 miscarriages that I know of, after my 3rd child was born. I do not know if I have any issues now or not....but up until now it was easy for me to get KU.
