Shallow Breathing/Apnea Monitors

My twins are still stightly having episodes.  DD had just had them during feedings the last 2-3 weeks and now she had 3 in 2 days in the middle of the night?!

My DS has had one about every 5 days and typically has 2 w/in 10 minutes of each other?!

I feel like I see them breathing and that it may just be shallow breathing that the monitor is not picking up on.

Anyone have experience with this?  Could this be the reason for the alarms, that they just get comfy while sleeping and just breath real slow/low??

I really hope so, bc their adjusted age is 3 weeks and I have been told by everyone that their episodes should end by their 40 week mark!!  TIA for your responses!

Re: Shallow Breathing/Apnea Monitors

  • What has your dr said about the episodes?  One night DD's went off a couple of times and her "belt" wasn't tight enough to pick up her breathing. Is that a possibility?

  • Well that is part of the problem... the doc was supposed to have called us last monthto let us know if this was happeneing at the end of  the month... but we never even recieved a call.  I ended up calling a week and a half after the downlaod and
I was only allowed to talk to a nurse that said the only thing in thier charts was "several episodes, continue monitors another month".

My babies have never changed colors and have self-regulated (except for when I am right there to jolt them) so I am just so frustrated that they are still 'having' these episodes when we were told they should stop at 40 weeks?!   UGH!!

I have not heard this, and i'm definately glad I didn't hear it a couple months back. Tage came home on an apnea monitor and he was on it until February (8 weeks past the 40 week mark). No doctor had ever said that to me, thankfully, because I would've been so worried.

Yes, this is why I am mostly worried bc all the NICU nurses and doctors and pedi all said they should stop within a week or two of dd.  Obviously, I am still seeing episodes and it breaks my heart to think there might be something wrong for the long haul.

I also have many realtives who have sleep apnea, so I am extra worried bc of this, but I didn't think that developed until later in life?!

But I am glad to hear that your lo's were off of the monitors 8 weeks after dd.  Hopefully I can look forward to a monitor free summer.  It just sucks that I feel like I am confined to a room all day every day!!
