2nd Trimester

Newborn allergic to dogs?

I love my 2 dogs so much and I could never imagine getting rid of them. They are my babies just as much as my daughter will be.  Neither me or my DH has an allergy to dogs is it possible for my newborn to be born with an allergy to dogs? I know it may sound like a stupid question but I just worried. I have read that if your newborn is around the dog right away it will not happen but I just didnt know if anyone else had this concern or new anything.

Thanks:)

  • This worry never crossed my mind with DS and I am not worried about it now. It's one of those things you worry about IF it happens. Relax a little and enjoy being pregnant : )

  • I was reading into this because I'm allergic to them, and have 2.. Obviously I'm worried about passing it to baby.. From what I read, you are more likely to pass on an allergy to baby if you have an allergic reaction any time in the 3rd tri. I've been trying to be extra careful since my reactions are from their saliva mainly (I get hives if they lick me) Hoping I can avoid passing it on :(

  • I know exactly how you feel!  I would die if my baby is allergic to dogs.  Oh goodness that is a prayer request of mine.  I love my pooches soooo much!  I joke that if the baby is allergic to dogs I will keep the dogs inside and the baby can sleep outside.  Of course I won't really do that....but, I've been comforted knowing that if babies are around animals instantly they are less likely to become allergic.  Goodness I hope there is truth to that!

  • It is possible, but I think it's pretty rare if the baby is exposed to dogs from a very early age. I wouldn't worry about it right now that's for sure. There's not anything you can do about it at this point.

And it's true that babies exposed to pets/animals at a young age are much less likely to have pet allergies later in life, too.

  • We had two dogs when our son was born. Both of us have siblings with allergies but our son was and is fine with animals. I don't think you should worry until there is actually a problem.
  • This crosses my mind too. Our dog, I'm not so worried about??she doesn't have a lot of fur??but I have a 15 yr. old Persian cat who I adore utterly. I can't even imagine giving him up. Hubby was allergic to everything when he was a kid, so I'm hoping, hoping, hoping LO doesn't wind up with severe allergies too.
  • I was worried about this as well, when pregnant with my DS. I talked to the pediatrician about it and he said pet allergies tend not to present themselves until around 12-18 months of age and if they've been exposed to the pets since birth...it's extremely rare for them to develop an allergy since they've most likely built an immunity to them.

My son is not allergic to dogs, but wouldn't you know...started showing signs of allergies toward cats (my mom and grandma have them) at around 18 months old. DH and I are allergic as well.

So, long story short...I'm sure it'll be fine :)
