Re: infant meats

  • Are you talking about the jarred meat purees?  Those are disgusting, I wouldnt touch them with a 10' pole.  Bridget eats at the table with us most nights and gets modified versions of whatever we're having.  I'll cut up small pieces of chicken for her to eat, and she's had ground turkey.  No red meat yet though.

  • So far we've introduced chicken and salmon (OK'd by our pedi). I buy organic, free range chicken and wild salmon.

Yesterday I made a chicken puree with quinoa, zuchini and carrots.

I've only given her salmon once but I added a little basil and olive oil and just flaked it and ensured no bones.

So far she's liked it all!

  • My son LOVES lunch meats.  I just tear off tiny pieces for him - it's very easy and non-messy.  I only use the Oscar Mayer and Hormel "Naturals" that don't have nitrites in them.

Ditto all of this. So far we've only given Gavin chicken, but I want to venture into fish soon.

  • I am not starting protein until LO is 9 months and meat products until a year. Our Ped. said that the earlier that proteins are introduced the more likely the chance of asthma and allergies and I have severe asthma and do not wish it on anybody so we are not taking our chances. Also, I think jarred meat and meals are gross
  • My pedi wanted us to start proteins at the 6 month visit (which was really at 6 and a half months)

I don't think he is ready for pieces of meat yet, so I have done the jarred meats (the idea of pureeing my own skeeves me out) and I've gone with the ones that are mixed with something else, and if it smells gross, I don't give it to him.

His favorites are Apples and Chicken and Sweet Potato and Turkey. We've tried a few others, but those don't smell gross, I've tasted them and they don't taste gross, and he really likes them.

  • We started meat at 6.5 months.  In most other countries meat is one of the first foods babies get.  I EBF, so I wanted to make sure my DD was getting enough iron, so we started with beef and carrots.  It's not jarred though, I make my own.
  • DS2 eats whatever we eat but when we started baby food at 4 months he gagged when he tried the meats...and that was the end of that!
  • Meats were a "first food" (not THE first) for DD.  She loves chicken.  And, I don't do the jars.  I poached some chicken and shredded it for her.  And, I saved out some ground beef (unseasoned) for her to try too.  Not so interested in the beef yet.  I think we'll try fish next week.

We do small bites of real meat, and I've also given the jarred meat and rice or meat and veggies. The Earth's Best is actually really tasty surprisingly, but Gerber is awful and I won't buy it again.
  • I bought a couple of the puree jars and they literally smell like catfood. I will make my own meat puree's from now on. So wasn't worth it. Plus, a lot of the stage 2 foods have meat in with veggies and those seem ok to me.

  • I have made beef and turkey.  I did a "beef stew" with carrots, peas, sweet potoes, beef, and macaroni.  I did turkey and sweet potatoes.
