I think it varies. I have not had one, and my OB said that they won't do one unless the baby is measuring way behind or way ahead. I have no idea how big (weight wise) my lo is at this point.
My practice does not do it, and I would decline if they did (unless there was evidence of a major problem). They are only right about 12% of the time and are often used as justification for an unnecessary c/s or induction.
the Ob practice i go to only does two standard u/s (1 to confirm pregnancy and 2 for the anatomy scan). so no, i didn't get a growth u/s. i guess i don't need one either since my fundal height has been on target this whole time.
Having an ultrasound in your third tri veries depending on your OB, Insurance, and if you are high risk or not. I did not get one. I got only two ultrasounds. One to determine the due date and one anatomy scan. I will not get another unless something happens between now and when LO gets here. If you are curious if you will get one or not you can call your OB and ask or wait utnil your next appointment.

I won't get one unless I stop gaining weight or fundal height starts being off. I asked my OB about it last appt, and he said those are the only reasons he'd do one, but since I'm measuring appropriately, he won't bother.

Not standard in my OB's practice. As a standard, they only do one ultrasound at 18-20 weeks for the anatomy scan. However, I got one with my first pregnancy at 28 weeks because they were concerned with my lack of weight gain, and with this baby I had one at 36 weeks because I was measuring big.
I had one last time because baby was measuring ahead, but I don't think I'm getting one this time. (I did have an u/s at 28 weeks to check on a "somewhat" low placenta.)
I think it varies. My cousin goes to the same practice I do and she had one with her first and I didn't. She consitently measured 3-4 weeks ahead so they did it more to see how big baby was (she ended up having a c-section due to an estimated large baby and measuring 4 weeks ahead - i didn't think that was necessary but obviously didnt say anything). I always measured on track with my DD and they never estimated her to be larger than a 6-7lb baby.
That being said, I WILL have one this time since I ended up with a c-section last time and am attempting to VBAC this go around. They do them standard for VBACs.
I will have to ask my doctor next time I see him, but I don't think I get another u/s. My last OB did a growth ultrasound but I had to switch doctors because he had a medical emergency a few weeks ago and can't deliver babies anymore.
I am geting one on the 21st I will be a day shy away from 35 weeks then. I am getting one because DD is measuring big. Normally though my MW doesn't do them at 35 weeks. (at least she didn't when I was pregnant w/ Ds)
It was standard for mine, but they did it at 32 weeks because LO has been consistently measuring 3 weeks ahead. My midwife says that they won't do another unless I make it to my due date or if I reach 37 weeks and I look scary big. Which I'm thinking at this point will happen.
Re: does everyone get a growth u/s around 35 weeks?
DS, May 2011
The only u/s that are pretty much standard is the one at the beginning to date the pregnancy and then the anatomy u/s around 20 weeks.
Growth u/s are only typically done if you have complications.
I have had a few growth u/s (at 28 weeks and 35 weeks) because I have GD.
My doctor will do one if I want one or if she has reason to be concerned about LO's size. Otherwise, they don't.
They do only the anatomy scan as standard in my office.
Since I have GD, I will be getting a growth ultrasound at my 36w appointment.
I never had one with DS, but he measured right on track my entire pregnancy.
I had one at 30w with this pregnancy and will have another one at 36w, but I have been measuring 4 weeks ahead since 23w.

Edit - mine will also be closer to 37-38 weeks.
