IUGR babies

Do they tend to stay under the curve for a longer time? DD had her 9 mo check up yesterday and is still under the curve for weight (13 lbs 6 oz) and height (24.5 in) but at 50th percentile for head size. I'm not worried, I know babies all grow at their own rate and I'm not expecting DD to be a big baby/person bc of family genetics, but I'm just curious.

Re: IUGR babies

  • DD was IUGR for unknown reasons (not too bad, though, 3lb12oz at 33w6d when she was born). She then gained weight slowly, then fell away from her own curve when my BM supply tanked, but she still seemed like she was getting enough. We put her on formula and she went back to gaining, but still stuck to her own curve. She was on the normal, un-adjusted weight charts for the first time at her last appt, at 18mos. She is 20lbs and in the 3rd percentile.

  • My DD was born at 34 weeks at 3lbs due to IUGR. She has definitely always been on the lower end of the curve.  She is currently 16 months and about 20lbs.
  • I would imagine so. My LO wasn't diagnosed IUGR although her growth was pretty closely monitored for a while since she was small. She was LBW when she arrived at 36 weeks and was considered SGA. She has hovered around the 1-3rd percentile since birth (based on actual age.) She is gaining consistently, though, and her pedi isn't concerned.
  • One of my girls was IUGR. Around 3 months or so she was finally on the growth curve and she's consistently stayed at the 5th percentile for weight and 50% for height every since. I actually think she might be just now starting to grow faster than her sister so I'm curious where she'll be at her 2yr checkup. Either way, she's healthy and happy and as long as she stays on her growth curve the pedi isn't concerned at all.

  • I would answer yes. My DD was closer to your LO's size (1lb4oz) and she JUST got on the chart 2 months ago at around18 months. She is in the 5% for weight and 25% for height. The same goes for a friend of mine whose DD was almost the same size as your LO. SHe also got on the chart at around 18 months. Good luck!
  • Yup. My VLBW/IUGR boy didn't hit the 3rd percentile on the growth chart until his 3rd birthday. It's been a struggle :(
