some more details about the possible job

okay so assuming that I even would get it, although its sounds like she is having a hard time filling it, here are some more of the issues I have with it.

besides having to work TH, F and M 8am-6pm and Sat and Sun 7am-5pm and missing out on all summer activites. the job is a tad over 30 miles away from my home and only pays $10 a hour. This is way below what I am looking for. I only applied for the job cause the listing I fit the qualifications, it never listed these horrible hours and it didnt list a salery range.

The first 40 hours woulld be paid at the $10 per hour and the last 10 hours would be time and a half. so roughly $550 a week gross.

There is the potential that I "could" get my folks to watch my boys and save daycare money, or maybe even find cheaper in home care rather than the center we were going to go to. The center will charge us $1170 a month for 3 days of daycare a week.

With Brians job there is the potential for travel all this summer. He will be gone for 8 days straight and then home for 6 is how it would work. So he will possibly be gone at least every other weekend and we would need someone to watch the kids then too.

I am really torn on this. It would majorly change our family life and could put some hardships on us with having to shuffle boyis around a lot. but then again its a job.

ETA: I called the unemployment office and found out I will qualify for and extension of benefits. I feel we still need to get rid of our car and that will help a ton. my old work sells Kia's and they have a awesome $159 a month lease deal on a Kia forte so we sould get rid of a huge car payment. and that would help a ton to get us going.

Re: some more details about the possible job

  • My personal thoughts are....pass on the job, sell the car, get bus passes, and plan a ton of fun, cheap, local, outdoor activities with the boys...and keep kicking ass on saving $.

  • When I read your post it almost sounds like you are talking yourself out of it which may be your answer. If it doesn't make sense financially because of child care that would likely be the biggest factor for me. No to mention it being 30 miles away with gas hitting $4/gallon and rising. Although missing all of the Summer Family activities would be a hard pill to swallow as well. I can only imagine how tough of a decision this must be. When DH was out of work for 2 years he was offered positions that paid way less than we needed, and was less than unemployment. Even though financially it didn't make sense it was still a hard decision for him. I'm sorry you are having to go through this. {hugs}

  • I'm sorry that you are having a tough time deciding!  I can only imagine how hard it is.  As someone who commutes 30+ miles a day, I will tell you it sucks!  Especially with the gas prices!   I think the hardest part about the commute is by the time I get home from work I am exhausted and then I notice that I tend to get more irritated because I feel like there is so much to get done but all I want to do is hang out with A.  I say keep looking, especially since you qualify for the extension.

I agree with Rachel that this long of a commute is not fun.  If you qualify for an extension, I'd keep looking.  There are lots of jobs that will pay $10 an hour closer to home I bet.

  • Looking at the logistics you laid out, it does not seem like a good choice to pursue this position. 30 miles away, for $10 an hour is not going to make much of a change financially when you factor in gas and childcare. Also, is it worth the wrench you will be throwing into your lives? This is definately a hard decision as yes, it is a job. I think you need to follow your gut on this one.

  • #1 - $10 will likely NOT cover daycare + "hidden expenses" (more convinience foods, and costs you don't neccassarily think of) + commute

#2 - leasing a car and driving a 30 mile commute = VERY bad idea...(I'm not a fan of leasing in the first place, HUGE money loser and a step backwards financially)

#3 - dump the extra car, get a bus pass, find local stuff to do - hang out with the kids.  The stress of juggling work, kids, traveling hubby =/= $10 worth of stress.  Plus you'll be lowering your "value" when the right job does come along (been there, done that).

Use the unemployment extension - keep job searching - sell the car - spend time with the kids and DH.  The right thing *will* come along at the RIGHT time.

  • With that new bit of information, I'd agree that it's not in your best financial interest, let alone the best interest of your family.

I hate to see you sell your car, Dawn - you deserve so much and you've had such tough luck the last few years.  That having been said, it is just a car.  When things turn around, perhaps you can get one just like it.  I applaude you for being so willing to do what it takes, even when it means downsizing, in order to keep things in the right place.

I would defnitely have to agree with all of this.  It doesn't sound like this job is the right fit for you and your family at this point in time.  I would file for the extension and find something closer and better.  Don't sell yourself short just to take a job! :) The right one will come along soon!

All of this.  If you can't do without a car, what about a $5-7k car. Payments would be about the same as a lease but you're not stuck in it when you're ready to upgrade again.  Leasing is rarely rarely rarely ever a good move financially.
