DH is having a really hard time with pain/numbness in his hand still. He tried to taper off the pain meds over the last week but has ended up with Restless Body type symptoms that have him wide awake and twitching all night. We didn't sleep from about 130 - 530 this morning.
He was so upset he finally gave in and took a pain pill, but it will just end up prolonging the withdrawl (which is totally boggling the mind, since he was only taking 1-2 pills a day for the last month, not the 6 prescribed.) We never thought that almost 8 weeks after the surgery he would still be having these problems.
I think I'd better call and see if we can get him seen today. I know there is something they can give him that will reduce the withdrawl symptoms. I'm just not sure there is anything that is going to help the pain and numbness except for time.
Re: ::drags self onto BOTB::
He had full shoulder replacement surgery in February. It was supposed to be partial replacement, but the glenoid (shoulder socket) was so degraded the surgeon went ahead and did the full.
He's having unusual side effect of numbness in his hand due to minor swelling in the shoulder, despite a full daily dose of NSAIDs and ice 2-3 times a day. I think a nerve must have been bruised, and it will just take time to heal, but in the mean time it's driving him batty.
(I can sort of relate - after having my wisdom teeth out my chin and lower lip were numb for a year from a bruised nerve - I never thought I'd get the feeling back, but it very slowly returned.)

Has he seen a pain managment doctor?
Maybe they could try something like suboxone to help him get off it? I've known of doctors who have done that before.
Hope he is able to feel better soon!
This is what I'm hoping to get rolling today. Withdrawl has become such a problem for our patients that we have 4 pain management docs on staff. I just never thought that such a low dose would still leave DH with withdrawl symptoms. He almost needs an anti-anxiety med at this point, it's gotten him so worked up. But then, most of those are addictive as well. : /
