How many changes for your stash.

I've always heard about 24 if you want to wash every 2 days, to start. I got enough for 29 changes so that we would have some slack.

I was just told fourty!? Really?

Totally depends on the baby. 40 seems extreme though. I'd say 24-36 to wash every 2 days. DD pooped a lot, lol.

I started with 20 for DD and added in a few more inserts after she was born. We were lucky that she only ate and pooped/peed every 3 hours, like clockwork. So we would have been okay with 2 dozen to last us a couple days. But, I do remember one occasion changing DD 4 times in one hour and more than once using 2 diapers in one changing session thanks to DD exploding all over the clean diaper in the middle of the change.

We have about 30 in our rotation now and can go 3 days if we need to - I still prefer to launder every other day.

For the newborn stage we used prefolds & covers. We had 1 doz Bummis unbleached (they run smaller than other infant PFs) and 2 doz GMD yellow edge. I think I washed every 2-3 days.

I have 36 pocket diapers and I feel like I am constantly washing or drying diapers as it is, so 40 doesn't seem that extreme to me.

I think I have about 30 and I NEVER need all of them. I use PFs and covers, and I end up using some as burp cloths and I still don't run out by the time I do laundry which is about every 3 days. I don't like to let them sit longer than that.

eta: You could definitely be comfortable with 24, with 29 you are SET. I would never go through forty without washing, my pail would smell like a rodent cage by then!

Forty seems a little excessive. Just figure that you are going to change every 2 hours, so 12 diapers a day. You'll want a few for a cushion because there will be the occasional 'pee on the clean diaper while changing' incident.

I had 3 dozen of the small prefolds. She wore those from 1 - 9 months. So, in the beginning she was going through about 12 diapers a day. That allowed me 3 days max between washes.

Now, I only have 2 dozen, since she doesn't have as many diaper changes a day.

We didn't cloth diaper in the beginning, but my little guy was averaging 25 diapers a day! I know he was in the minority, but it can happen. I would just keep in mind that you may need to add more.

We started with 24 prefolds that fit and I was washing every 1.5 days (DS pooped and peed a LOT). 29 sounds good to me.

I sometimes changed 18 diapers a day when DD was a newborn. That extreme changing phase didn't last too long though. There's no way you need 40 for an older baby. I think you will be fine with 29.

I think 29 should be fine, 40 seems high to me (though we probably have that many w/my obsession). I started with 24 prefolds w/covers, 6 fitteds, and 3 AIO's. I could have gotten away w/less than that though.
