* re-post from cloth diapering:
DH is totally against it (big mess, seems complicated, etc) and I have no idea where to start - besides "knowing" that I need a one size or a 2 (I believe that's the one for babies up to 35 lbs). And that the snap ones look a bit more sturdy.
I would love any and all help/info, as well as recommendations on where to get some inexpensive ones. If any of you ladies have any that you're looking to trade or sell, please let me know! Thank you very much in advance.
Re: I'm REALLY wanting to try cloth diapers
Do it! Between breastfeeding and cloth diapering having a baby barely costs me anything, which is pretty awesome. I really love cloth diapering too.
I bought prefolds and covers for the newborn stage. I ended up getting fitted diapers from my aunt and I use those instead of prefolds now and they are way easier. I would recommend them if your husband isn't completely on board. I have 5 xs Thirsties covers and they are great.
Once my LO grows a bit more we'll be moving into one size pocket diapers, probably Kawaii brand since they are low cost and get decent reviews.
Absolutely do it! It really isn't a big mess at all and most CDs go on as easily as disposable diapers. I was so happy to make the change with DS1 and now I already have all the diapers I'll need for DS2. Just lurking on the CD board will provide you with tons of information. But if you really want to get started you might want to consider getting one of the trial packages to see how it goes for you guys. I have a wide variety of diapers that I gathered over the 2 years DS was in them just because I wanted to try different types. I like using pocket diapers the most for when he was older but used prefolds a lot when he was younger.
We have been cding from when we got home from the hospital. Look into the trial first.
DS is about 10.5 lbs now, and just starting to fit into the kawaiis...some styles seem to run a bit bigger than others. We also have some FB perfect size, and I have some BGs on the way. As pp said, Kawaii's site is a little bare right now. I think they are increasing in popularity, and often their shipments get held up in customs for a while.
Economically the NB stage is hit or miss... although I have no idea what sposies for the last 7 wks would have cost.
Good luck! I think it is worth it environmentally, for not having the same chemicals around DS's butt, and it can be economical depending on a number of factors. (Hit up the CDing board on a Friday and you will see a lot of talk about "Stalking the stocking" there are some fitted brands out there that are $ due to the prints, and if you become a collector, well it is like anything...
DH & I were just discussing how much we love CD! My LO has never had a diaper rash (not even so much as a red bum), we've never had to run out to buy diapers because we're out, and we have never once had a blowout - not one.
Use the resources the others have provided and decide for yourself. But once I explained to DH about the cost savings, environmental factors, and health benefits, he said, "why would you NOT CD?"
I love cloth diapers. It is so easy and nice not having to go through so many sposies. I can't wait to buy some more for DD.
I use BG3.0s on DS and they've held up wonderfully. I'd like to try the prefolds (Kushies) with covers (Thirsties) route for DD just for something different.

Day Three
We cd's our 1st dd for several months, I think she was about 4 months - 1 yr when we did it. We got into it in the beginning b/c dd had HORRID diaper rash, we had tried everything and finally went to cding. I have no regrets w/ our choice but we did decide not to do it again for the following reasons...just an alternate opinion from what you've gotten so far.
-cost...sure, it can be super cheap but if you are anything like me you will want the super cute, more exp. diapers, this totally blows the cost savings imo. Ppl told me we could use the diapers for more than 1 kid...we only did it for 7 or so months and I do not see how that would have been possible, they were already showing wear!
-washing...when we cd dd, we had a top loading washer, I found it super easy to go through the motions of washing them w/ the different wash cycles. We now have a front loader and while we now have sanitary cycle, we can't set it for just a rinse or anything so I would be hesitant on how clean they were (this could totally just be my paranoia a resistance to change tho!)
-rash...dd 1 ended up getting more diaper rash, this prob wouldn't happen to you, I think she just has REALLY bad skin! We worried it was a yeast rash and had a hard time killing it so the diapers didn't just recontaminate her poor bum =(
-daycare...will your dc go to daycare? our dd went to an in-home center who had no problem w/ the cd's but from what I heard many places won't do it.
Please don't let me talk you out of it, the mess, the laundry was all no big deal to me and I def believe it is good for the planet, but it isn't a perfect system for everyone...gl!
We love it!!
A friend of mine is pregnant and recently she and her hubby watched our LO. hey were nervous about our CDs, but after changing a few they are now planning to CD their LO! They saw how easy it is.
Maybe you could get a few to try out and show DH to help him make a more informed decision?
FWIW, my H actually really loves our cloth diapers. Our son was 6 pounds 4 ounces when we brought him home from the hospital, so even our newborn diapers seemed a bit too big on him at first, plus we were dealing with his circumcision and whatnot, so we used a bag of disposables and hated them. They leaked and H said he felt like by the end of week one, we'd already gone through enough for a small landfill.
We use Thirsties Duo pockets, Thirsties Fab Fitteds, which I really like, Kissaluvs, BG 3.0 in the XS and prefolds. Honestly, it's no grosser than disposables and the poop is really no big deal. Do you have a dog? Has he ever been sick in the house? Than both you and DH can deal with cloth.
We're about to finish our first week in cloth! It took DD a little bit to grow into them (we use BumGenius 4.0 one size pockets), and we still haven't tackled using them for overnight (lots of size 1 disposables to use up still), but we're loving them!
I found good info on the CD board's FAQ link and at Jillian's Drawers website.
So far it's been easy peasy and cost effective. Good luck!

We used paper diapers until the meconium had passed, and then started with our kissaluvs size 0 with prowrap covers. No blowouts, no leaks, and LO never even notices he's wet. I have to watch the clock to change him.
My DH wasn't thrilled about CDs, BUT, after leaks in the paper dipes, and using them for just a few days, DH is a walking advertisement for them! My advice for your DH: buy a few and let him try them. He'll never want to go back.
Oh, and I have a HE FL washer. I looked up the manual online, and was able to program it to the wash that I wanted (cold prewash/hot wash/cold rinse/extra rinse).
Check out the FAQs at the top of the CD board. Very helpful. As well as https://www.theecofriendlyfamily.com/2010/07/ive-never-looked-back.html. Everything I needed to know about CDs, I learned from that blog. She's a bumpie, too.
