H was basically told at work today that they are ready for a shut down on Friday. It isn't looking good. I really hope he isn't out of work too long, it is going to seriously stretch us to go without his pay.

I feel your pain. My DH has been working only 24 hrs/week since Feb. His job is paid through federally funded grants- essentially the budget cut in question. As the dems/reps continue with extensions and no decisions, we a living off of almost half of what we used to (which wasn't a whole lot to begin with). We still have no idea if his job will go back to normal, stay at PT or shut down altogether. He has an interview elsewhere tomorrow. Fingers crossed. Good luck to you guys.

A lot of rash bad decisions on both side will be made friday, or early next week to minimize this. Id bet good money if it happens it will happen for a week MAYBE two.
I'm a federal government employee, and yet my agency has said virtually nothing about what we should do or who will be considered essential. I know I won't be essential, but it would be nice to know the procedures. I know we have to clear our desks on Friday just in case, but other than that, everything just looks so uncertain.
As the main breadwinner, it's nervewracking to think about not getting a paycheck. We do have savings, so hopefully we can ride this out with minimal disruption. I'm just so frustrated with both parties- the Dems for not taking care of this when they should have back in October, and the Repubs asking for ridiculous policy riders on top of the cuts.
Meanwhile, we are the ones facing uncertainty and anxiety for our families. Awesome.

I'm a grant-funded federal employee, and I know we are a big part of the discussion about specific cuts. My employer also has said very little about an impending shutdown and what it would mean for us and especially the families we serve- I think our families are totally in the dark about what's going on. We're partially funded by the county, so we're hoping they can/will absorb some of our costs until the budget gets worked out. It's definitely scary to have all of this up in the air with a baby on the way

I don't but my dad does and he's almost at the top rung of the civ service ladder; the same thing was announced--mission essential employees only will not be furlowed.
My question is this--how can you tell thousands of employees that they're not mission essential when they've been performing a mission for years? How can you justify having these tax-paid positions if they're not all mission essential? It makes no sense to me--everyone IS mission essential...right!?

The MA state government does it 2-3 times every winter. We go to state of emergency for snow and only essential gov t employees have to work.n 75% of state employees are told they arent essential, stay home.
Everyone is not essential. Positions are needed to run smoothly, but that does not mean that position is essential. A secretary is not essential, but things operate much better with one than without.
i just hope the resolve this budget crisis quickly (and without making too many mistakes in cuts)
DH is military and we're still wondering if he's going to get paid.
My husband is also military and its really stressing me out, we're not prepared to not get paid. We have bills to pay and not enough savings! PS-I see that you're naming your baby Eliza! My name is Eliza and I always loved it because no one ever had the same name as me.

My husband does and he was told the same. I am freaking out!
I work for the fed govt, but my job will not be affected.
Also from my understanding (from what me and my coworkers have been told by our boss, and the research that we have done.) Those that have jobs that provide national security, or protect life and property are not affected.

As someone who has been putting together plans for my 70,000+ person Department... it is a LEGAL definition not a moral or otherwise normal one. Basically you are essential if you are protecting life or property, are law enforcement, or are have funding through another source (user fees, mandatory funding, etc.).
Anyway, the whole thing is just silly. The main purpose of Congress is to fund to government. If they can't do that they shouldn't be able to use their time to pass other silly resolutions... And it really bothers me that Members will continue to get paid regardless. They would hurry up if their paychecks depended on this too.
I am in federal contracting and it is horrible. Things have been so stagnant and if they do not shutdown but extend it week by week as a lot of people are saying they will do that will be just as bad - because everything will be at a standstill. The thing that drives me crazy is that the president and congress still get paid. Wow - what an incentive to fix this. And - lets not forget the pay increases Congress received.
There are SO many people in the government space that are non essential - contractors and government employees alike but to all the sudden say they are not is not really fair. Shouldn't they get rid of the administrative bloat for good. It is crazy how much money is wasted each year on stupid purchases because if you don't spend your funding you will not get it next year. And lets not even talk about the multi million dollar contracts that never ever solve any of the problems.
FYI, it looks like most of you don't live in DC... be glad for that! If there is a shutdown our local government will be shutdown too. No trash pick up, no parking enforcement, no DMV, no libraries, etc. Sigh.
DH is a contractor so he apprently will get paid and have to go to work but it's been really stressful at their office this week with everythign going on. He works in a Federal Government building.

My DH does... He's DoD, but also essential personnel, which means he will have to continue to work but not get paid. We have some savings, but he's our only income. Non-essential employees, like my mom, get furloughed. It sucks a$$ and I wish our government would get their sh!t together.
We were given "this" to resolve any concerns we had...REALLY???

My husband is also military and the only one bringing money in right now. Luckily we have savings to get us through a few missed paychecks, but not many, I really think I'm going to put off buying some of the big baby items I was getting ready to order, just in case ... the mortgage needs to get paid first, and hubby needs fuel in his car to drive 50 minutes to work every day.
For those of you with military pay, I've read about relief centers being set up for interest free loans. All you have to do to qualify is show your military ID and sign a form that says you'll repay the loan X number of days after the back pay comes through.
I'm really sad for all those out there getting furloughed since they won't be getting any kind of back pay.
Every year the debates come down to the wire, but never before have I felt it was this serious...
