Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Spit-up or throw up?!

My 4 month old has been spitting up a good hour or so after eating lately.  It has that nasty curdled look to it and at times smells a little funky.  He's a super active little guy all the time so I'm not sure if it just isn't settling real well before he is active again with his kicking and everything else so he ends up spitting up or if it is throw up?  A friend of mine mentioned his belly might be upset but he surely doesn't act sick at all and I would think if he had an upset tummy he'd be fussy?  How do you know the difference between throw up and spit-up at this age... anyone else deal with this?  Spit-up a good hour or more after eating?

That's normal.  Spit-up tends to peak at 4 months.

You'd notice bile from his stomach if it was true throw up.

  • Vomiting usually entails a forceful emptying of stomach contents. As in, you'd KNOW if he was throwing up.

It's totally normal to spit-up an hour or two after eating. If he isn't bothered by it, I'd say you have nothing to worry about.

  • My DD started this about 3 months, sometimes spitting up up to 2 hours after eating. I called the pedi office (and asked again at her 4 month appt.) and they said as long as she doesn't seem to be in pain when spitting up and as long as she is gaining weight (which she is) it is perfectly normal. They said babies usually peak in their spitting up around this time before it starts to decrease and taper off by around 7 months. I'm not sure what the difference is between spitting up and throwing up though. My DD's spit up also is all curdled about an hour after eating. I have also noticed that it happens more when she is agitated or excited, so maybe you have the same thing. Too excited so throw up. Lovely, I really hope it does wear off, don't fancy having a kid who throws up every time she gets excited.
  • Thank you for asking this!  My 3.5 month old has been doing this, too.  I thought something might be wrong, but he never spits up during his night feedings so...  I guess the curdled spit up an hour later is a normal thing?
