Babies: 3 - 6 Months

nipple shield

I have been trying to wean LO off the nipple shield from day 2 of using it.  I think we have finally done it!  The last two days all of her feedings have been without the shield.  It is very exciting!  When I hit the two month mark I pretty much gave up and figured that she would be on it until she weaned.  Life without the shield is much easier!

Re: nipple shield

  • I am so happy for you!  I tried one time to do it without it and she go soooo mad.  I tried several times and the results were often extreme anger on her part and then I just give in and put it on.  Any thoughts?

I started taking it off midway through feeding. That way the nipple was easier to latch onto and he wasn't overly hungry and easily angered. GL!

  • The exact same thing happened to me! I had completely resigned myself to always using it and one night in my fumbling attempts she latched without it and hasn't needed it since - that was around 3.5 months. Still going strong - GL.

My LO would also get super mad at first.  I just decided that I was going to try each and every feeding.  Once I became consistent it would help a lot.  I would always start with the nipple shield and gradually slip it off.  She would scream so I would put it back on.  After a while, she would try it for a little and then scream.  Eventually she would try just a bit longer until she wasn't using it at all.  One thing I also noticed was that if I pulled her off to take it off she would get really mad.  If I would wait until she accidentally slipped off and then pull off the shield she wouldn't notice right away.  Good luck!  It took me several weeks of trying every feeding before we are shield free.

I started taking it off half way through a feeding. Then I started tryig with out it...slowly but surely we were free of it. It took until she was just over 2 months.
