VBAC

Sorta frustrated with first appointment....

We live in a very crunchy town that is (presumably) pro-doula, pro-vbac, pro-everything :)  The OB Coordinator that we saw is a NP, and the lactation consultant for our HMO. We had our first appointment with her this morning.  I had always assumed she was as crunchy as the rest of us, but maybe I was wrong.  One of the reasons for the appointment today is for her to recommend what doctor I should see.  Since I had a C/S last birth, I have to be farmed out to the OB in another practice since the family practice doctors can't supervise VBACs and can't do C/S.

She was NO HELP.  I told her I was very strongly wanting a VBAC and it felt like she internally rolled her eyes.  She said "well, any of the doctors should be fine."  And since the doctor on call would be supervising the birth she said it didn't really matter who I saw and if they were supportive of VBACs.  Really?  It doesn't matter who I see for the next 31 weeks who may or may not be supporting my decision to VBAC?  Or on the other hand who could be pressuring me to schedule a RCS for the whole time?  She also felt the need to tell me several times how inconvenient it would be to have to have a C-Section with whoever was on call that day, rather than being able to nicely schedule my CS with my own doctor and tie it up with a frickin bow two weeks before my due date.

Sorry for the long, drawn-out vent.  I'm just so irritated with her right now.  And I'm unfortunately back to square one with having to figure out which OB to go with.  I was so hoping she'd actually have some constructive suggestions.  I've scoured the internet and only found one name recommended.  Anyone in Madison, WI have any recs?

  • Have you tried your local ICAN list? Or maybe check the mothering.com boards (Find Your Tribe, and they have a VBAC board). Also, the NP might not know the specific doctors' support of VBAC - maybe talk to some of them directly? good luck!

  • I hear you.  My 1st appointments were with NPs, and I asked both the ones I saw which doctor within the practice would be most supportive of a VBAC (mine didn't seem all that supportive, frankly, and I know others wouldn't have been).  Both of them, even the one who seemed crunchier than me, said it didn't matter.  I don't know if that is because they really thought that, or if it was a 'we work with them, and we can't give our opinion' type of thing.  Either way, it wasn't helpful.  I ended up getting my recommendations from the ICAN list and my pediatrician, who is pretty active in the birth community here, and definitely someone who I'd call 'crunchy'.

Also, if you're thinking about using a doula, doula organizations or individual doulas in your community may know who is good to work with for a VBAC.  Good luck - I found a good doctor, and I sincerely hope you are just as lucky!

  • Ugh, that sounds very frustrating!  I had a similar encounter with a NP at an OB practice I saw for my 16 week appt (they were supposed to be the "vbac-friendly" practice at that hospital.  Riiiiight....   I went to my local ICAN chapter meeting the next day and got glowing recommendations for a hospital midwife practice about half an hour away.  So, I called that group the day after the meeting and scheduled a consultation.  I fell in LOVE with the midwife group and ended up having a amazing waterbirth (I still shed some happy tears just thinking about it).

I agree with all of pp's.  If you haven't tried the FYT on mothering.com and/or your local ICAN chapter, I think you should.  GL!

  • Well that lady stinks! I'm sorry you got her bad attitude. A local doula and ICAN helped me find a great midwife. I still did lots of interviewing but they helped narrow it down in the beginning. Would you be open to the idea of a birth center? Sometimes they are bigger VBAC proponents. I realize it isn't for everyone, but it is the choice I felt best fit my needs this pregnancy. Lastly, I think it is sad that VBAC is a crunchy topic. I'm crunchy, but I think VBAC should be mainstream. GL! Keep us posted. I hope things get easier. :)
