If your LO had jaundice... come in

The first week we were home with DS, we had to keep bringing him to the hospital every day for blood tests to check his bilirubin levels. They were high, but never got high enough that he needed to go under the lights. When he was 5 or 6 days old, his bili level started to go down, and we were told that once it goes down, it stays down. His color started to get better we thought we were in the clear.

But the other day I noticed that in the outside corner of each eye, the white part is still a tinge yellow, and when my dad was over he said he thought DS's skin looked a little yellow still. I don't really think so, but I see him every day so it's hard for me to tell.

Is it possible/normal for him to still be a little yellow? Should I call the doctor? I don't want to be one of those paranoid first time moms..

Re: If your LO had jaundice... come in

  • My LO was under the lights and he is still a tad yellow. You can see it in the corner of his eyes still but everywhere else looks normal. He hasn't been tested since the day after we were discharged (3/20). We had a doctor's appointment yesterday and his pedi wasn't concerned.

If you are worried about it, call. That's what they are there for. It is better to get peace of mind that sit there worrying.

  • DS looked really yellow for awhile, but his numbers were never even high enough to even need to be rechecked at all.  So he was technically never considered jaundice but he was yellow for awhile.  So since your LO was jaundice, I'd say it's normal.  As long as his numbers were going down and the Dr's were happy with that, it's fine...it will go away eventually!
  • My LO was so bad that she was hospitalized & it took about 3 weeks for her to not look yellow.  Her eyes were the last to clear up.  Our pedi said it can take a while to clear up from their skin.

  • Thank you ladies! I feel so much better now! His color is definitely a million times better than it was... I guess it just takes time.

  • It took Bug about a month before the yellow disappeared completely. 15 minutes of sun through a window or a few minutes of sun during a walk will help clear it up. We went to the park a couple of times.

  • My Pedi said that it starts at the head and works its way down.  If it gets to the legs he said to call and go to the dr.  Luckily Harlie didn't need to go in or under lights or anything, but she was pretty jaundice and her eyes and face were yellow, but it went away after a few days.
