Another BF pump Question

Hi ladies. I am staying at home for a year with the baby and plan on breastfeeding for 6 months to a year if all goes well. I want a good pump (assuming I will use it again for the next baby) but don't want to spend 300-400 if it is not necessary. I am looking at the Medela Pump in style with tote for 250. , the Medela Swing (single pump) 140. and Amdeda Purely Yours for 250.00.

How often can I expect to pump, assuming I am home with the baby everyday. I definitely want to pump extra for H to feed, and for back up when guests are over and we are out, etc. but have no idea how much I will be using this and would hate to buy a single and have to repurchase a double down the road.

What are you ladies going to do? Any thoughts? TIA!

Re: Another BF pump Question

  • With my 1st I got a cheap single, HATED it and got a good double.  I got one that you could buy parts for so that I could let sisters use it and I could use it for any kids I had.  I will be using it on my 3rd in a few months and both my sisters used it.  So it is on its 5th kid.  LOVE it and would not go to a single again.

  • When I was at home I pumped once a day to build up some supply.  I never had a single pump but would not want one.  Sometimes...okay most of the time...it was hard to even fit in the pumping time.  If I had to do one side at a time it would take too long.  I would definitely get a double.  But if you are not working and are just pumping once a day I would not spend a ton on a pump as you're not going to beat it up ;)~  Sorry I don't know much about the specific ones you mentioned to comment on them.  I know I have a Medela but it was a hand-me-down and I just replaced the parts.

Thank you! I know, thats what I was thinking-just bc I am home with baby doesn't mean I want to pump all day and night, haha. Okay, so far sounds like the singles are a pain.

  • Definitely get a a double.  It can take 15 minutes to do one side so imagine sitting there for a half hour to do both.  I have the Pump in Style and the Ameda.  I prefer the PIS b/c I think it has better suction.  I am a working mom so I have gotten my $ worth out of my pumps.
  • I purchased the Medela Swing Single pump a few years ago and I ended up pumping exclusively for a whole year.  I was pleased with it for the price.  I was able to use a double pump in the hospital for a few days, and personally I didn't like them.  I always found that I needed the extra hand to massage my breast and help with the process, so I wasn't even physically able to use two pumps at the same time.  Just personal experience though.

  • I don't know if anyone has ever bought from buybuybaby.com(I would be curious to know if they are reliable)...but they will price match on medelas. They are not allowed to list medela prices...but you can send a request for a price list, and you will get one same or next day. I know they just recently had a special for their medela Pump in Style for 219$.

    They also rent pumps.

How often you can expect to pump is really just based on you and your child's needs. If you are working full time, I recommend pumping as often as you can between feedings to build a good back-up supply. If you are a SAHM and don;t leave baby with any sitter hardly, maybe once a day or less for when you need a few bottles (if you are going to leave with sitter or if DH wants to feed LO) .

If you plan on frequent pumping, double pumps are the way to go IMO. It's faster, and you get more milk with one round.

  • Also you may want to remember that not all babies latch on well.  If my baby does not latch, I will be pumping full time regardless of being a SAHM...just something to think about :)

BuyBuyBaby is reliable - they are owned by BedBath&Beyond.  I registered there and they do have stores across the country too.  Also, you can use non-expired BedBath&Beyond coupons there as well (in-store only I believe).

And ditto on getting a double pump!  There are things you can do to make them "hands free".  I saw a post here a week or so ago about a rubber band trick (wish I would have known that when I was pumping for DD) and also I've heard women say they use an old sports bra or buy a cheapie and cut holes in them to thread the pump horns through.  Another trick I wished I would have known when I was pumping for DD.  I'll try them this time around though!

  • Double all the way.  I am a SAHM and I pumped at least once a day during the early months, to build supply and a freezer stash so I could leave the boy.  There were times when I pumped 4 or 5 times a day a little later on for whatever reason.  A single would have taken forever.  And a freezer stash is so important so you can have a few hours off during the day or overnight.  There are kids who refuse to use a bottle, but I think they are pretty rare.

And I did the rubberband/hairband trick to make my pump a handsfree device. Super simple, if you look on kellymom.com you will find very easy instructions.  No need to buy a special apparatus or piece of clothing, other than the nursing bra.

I had the Medela Pump in Style, in a backpack.  It was a few years old when I got it, my sister bought it and never actually got to use it with her son who was 2 when I had Sam.  I plan to have the suction tested and if it needs a replacement, I will get the same type again.

ETA:  Buy Buy Baby is awesome.  And you can use the Bed Bath and Beyond coupons, as long as they aren't expired.  So I use my expired ones at Bed Bath and Beyond and save the newer ones for Buy Buy Baby.

  • I LOVED my Medela Pump in Style!  Still have it & plan to use it with DS2.
  • You will want a double for sure!  You can use it as a single if needed.  I had the Ameda purely yours and was very happy with it for the cost.  I think you can find it online for less than $200 if I remember correclty/  I did feel that the suction may have been less toward the end of the year that i used it. Also, if I'm correct, the medela automatically adjusts as you go through let down cycles, whereas the ameda is manual and you adjust it as needed.

As far as how often you will pump, that will depend on how often DH will be feeding.  I found that as a BFing mom, it was easier to feed DD most of the time. I worked 3 nights a week so DH fed those nights and I pumped at work, but if I was home, I nursed her. My usual routine on days off once she was STTN, was to feed one side, pump the other in the morning.  The nurse throught the day.  I'd only pump additionally if we were going somewhere and I wouldn't be nursing her. We were on the go a lot, so I did seem to still pump often!

  • Oh..pregnancy brain. I have to correct my reply. It's not buybuybaby that price matches or that you email for medela prices. it's awaybabyessentials.com! (oops!!!)

But thanks for the info on buybuybaby (I have been looking at them)

    has anyone used awaybabyessentials?
