S/O tummy sleeping

DD always seems to sleep better/longer on her tummy (on someone's chest, on her boppy, etc). Whenever I put her on her back, she fusses and flails her arms & legs (we swaddle her arms out because she screams if her arms are in) and she wakes up. She'll even wake up in her RnP half the time (I also think we're starting a growth spurt. Yay). Eventually she'll settle and sleep ok, but it takes some soothing to get her there.

When did you start putting your LO's on their tummy to sleep? I'm really nervous about trying it because I'm not sure she's got enough head/neck control yet. She seems to do pretty good when awake so maybe that's just my nerves.Do you lay them down with their legs tucked or straight out? Do you use a blanket/swaddle or just dress them warm to make up for lack of?

How did YOU do the first night? I'm thinking I should arrange for my mom to come over the next morning in case I end up watching her all night long.

Sorry so long.

  • I let DD sleep on her tummy during the day, but she still sleeps in her RnP at night.  She has been sleeping through the night since she was about 6-8 weeks.  She did do one night in her crib on her tummy and I left a night light on in case I woke up and wanted to check on her.  I think I was up once during the night to check on her.  Good Luck!

  • My LO, Iris is 12 weeks. She started sleeping on her tummy at around 3 weeks old. I would have never given in so easily to my firstborn, though! I was so nervous when he started to get uncomfortable on his back. I think I forced him to sleep on his back until he could roll over on his own! I think its fine as long as you are okay with it. I put Iris on her tummy on a firm mattress with a thin sheet and just another light blankie over her back. It doesnt make me nervous anymore, but like I said, it did with my first!

  • DS is 8+ weeks and last week we attempted the tummy sleep b/c he wasn't getting any sleep otherwise. I was REALLY nervous about it and didn't want to, but we have the Angelcare monitor and it eased my mind slightly. Even still I was up all night.

Anyway, at our 2 month appt. I was reemed by the nurse and the doctor for allowing this to happen. (Sleeping on his side only worked for a little bit) He told me that after a study was done the SIDS rate went down 87% by merely turning babies on their backs. He told me to let him cry (which I have a terrible time doing), swaddle him and he would eventually fall asleep on his back. DS grunts terribly on his back and I worry that he is uncomfortable but I did it anyway. Normally I would pick him up after about 2 minutes of this, but I left him and it lasted maybe 10 minutes before he was asleep. The last few days he has slept on his back and last night he slept for 3 1/2 hours straight, before it was only 10-45 minutes.

My point is...After the doctor told me about the drop in rates it really made me think twice. Lack of sleep vs. the possibility of something terrible happening. It felt to me like I was rolling the dice because he doesn't have full neck control yet. When he does it might be a little different, but I thought I'd share my story with you.

Please don't swaddle her if you are going to put her on her belly.

  • I've never laid them on their tummies to sleep.  With DS, he would just roll onto his tummy if he wanted to sleep that way once he was able to roll and I left him like that.  The only time they've slept on their tummies is on one of our chests since we're holding them like that.  I do let DD sleep on her side though.  Makes it so much easier to nurse throughout the night that way.  The nurses at the hospital actually put DS on his side to sleep, too.

The first night?  Pretty easy.  Well, we bedshare so there's really nothing to it.  She wakes, I'm already right next to her to fling my boob out and let her eat.

  • Have you ever seen the BREATHABLE crib mattress?  You LO can have their face right in their mattress.....face down....and breathe right through it.  It has really cute openings cut in the sides of it where air enters and exits, and then the mattress area has an open cells that allows the air to travel up and down.  There are tons of other benefits to it as well.....We found it at https://securebeginnings.com/

I think this mattress is worth checking out....we love ours.

Oh gosh, what a great idea! I wish I known about this before. It's pricey ($400 for the set, it looks like) but considering how much I paid for my mattress, crib sheet set, and Snuza monitor I probably would've gotten this instead and saved myself from worrying about LO as he was on his tummy at nap time.

  • My baby has slept on her tummy since she was 2 weeks old.  It's the only way she'll sleep.  One of her older brothers was the same way and I started with him at 6 weeks and was paranoid - would check on him every ten minutes.  But I guess now after doing it with one kid I'm not worried about it.  You have to do what works for your kid.

  • My DD has slept on her belly since about 6 weeks old, she would not sleep any other way. I was so paranoid so I bought the angelcare monitor...if the baby stops breathing for 20 seconds it will set off an alarm. This has let me sleep longer and my DD has been sleeping for 6 hours straight at night. Also no blankets or animals in the crib or the bumper unless it is a breathable one. I keep her room about 70 degrees and put her in light footed pajamas. You do not want to keep her to warm, overheating increases sids, so keep room between 68-72 and just a light sleeper. Just don't tell the doctor.
