always dizzy/light headed/off feeling

I'd say for the past month I've been having daily feelings of being dizzy, light headed or just off whenever I go from sitting to standing, or if I turn my head quickly I feel like the room is spinning.  I'm making sure to keep hydrated.  I can't think of anything I am doing differently that could be causing this.  I did make an appointment to see my eye doctor on Monday, as a place to start to make sure my contacts are still the right strength.  After that, I don't really know where I should start if my eyes are fine.  I no longer carry DD in her Ergo because I'm scared I'll get that feeling when we are out and it makes me nervous.  I don't usually feel this way right when I wake up, it kicks in around lunch time and sticks with me the rest of the day.  Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Re: always dizzy/light headed/off feeling

  • I felt like this when I had my ectopic but it was horrible.. I have also felt like this when I was severely anemic and also when I neglect to eat. I would definitely go to a doctor.

  • Could you be experiencing vertigo?
  • Have you considered allergies?  I had this happen to me last year and it was kind of freaky.  I got checked by my doctor (to rule out any possibility that I was at risk for a stroke) and she said it was most likely pressure on my eustacean tubes caused by sinus buildup from allergies.  I had never really experienced allergy symptoms before that.

For me the feeling felt like the room took a quick spin.  It didn't last very long, but it was very disconcerting.

I started Flonase and Zyrtec, but ultimately acupuncture helped the most.

  • Are you eating enough/eating enough protein? I'm have hypoglycemia and I get that feeling when I have low blood sugar. If I eat, the feeling usually goes away but I still feel yucky for the rest of the day. It's really hard to truly diagnose hypoglycemia (I had to go in for several fasting blood tests before mine was discovered) - but they also talked about thyroid issues, anemia, and a few other things when we were trying to figure out what's wrong with me. I think starting with blood work would be a good first step!

I have the same issue. I am super sensitive to my food intake.  Also other causes could be hormones or ear infection. I went through a period when Baby N was 2-6 months old where I was getting dizzy all the time. I couldn't figure it out and it eventually went away. I was thinking it might have been post partum hormones.

  • I eat all the time, so I would think I am getting enough food/sugar.  I don't really know much about Vertigo.  I was anemic while pregnant, but I haven't had blood work done since then.  I was taking some allergy medicine even though I'm not really having any allergy symptoms, but today I didn't put anything in my body to see if it was maybe the pills.  I was taking Claritin.  I took my blood pressure yesterday a few times after sitting awhile and it was normal.  It sucks that it could be a number of things.  I'm getting so annoyed with it because I am joining a gym but don't feel right to even think about getting on a treadmill.

Any kind of cold/allergy medicine makes me feel that way. Were you taking the meds every time you felt weird?

I have an eye appointment set up and I'm trying to get my blood work done as well, just waiting on my doctors nurse to call me back.
  • go to the doc, but i had this on and off since college - and actually since then have fainted 4 times in public.

with me, it is anemia mixed with a sudden blood pressure drop. the blood pressure drop can be triggered by different medications - such as otc drugs like antihistamines.

hope you get it figured out!

  • I agree...you need to see your doctor.  There's some labwork you need and they need to do an exam on you.  Sounds like it could be dehydration or vertigo...you need to be seen...just to make sure it's not something more.  They eye doctor will not be as useful as your primary care doctor...might be too much for some Ob/Gyns, but not necessarilly so.

  • How are your allergies?  Mine have been horrible (and turned into a sinus infection) and it makes me dizzy from all the pressure build-up in my ears.  I almost fell over doing lunges earlier this week.
