My baby shower is this weekend. I'm really looking forward to it, but it also means that there will be lots of shower food lying around (including cake) that I can't eat. I told my sister that all she needed to do was make sure there was at least one thing I could eat there, and not to alter her already planned menu - a move I'm beginning to regret. If you've already had your shower, how did you deal?
Re: GD Ladies - Shower Anxiety!
I would not be anxious about it....honestly, (and some may disagree) cheating a little bit for one day (particularly your shower!!) is fine to do. My dietician agrees. Just plan wisely....for example, if you are dying for a piece of cake- make that your carb. Cut it in half so its less. And then load up on the veggies and cheese cubes for the rest of it. Or if its the dips that you would love to splurge- use mostly veggies but then have some crackers to eat it with. Or if its all of it, take a small taste of all the food on your plate. Load up on some protein before the shower starts- like some meats, cheese, and nuts. This will help to counteract the carbs you are going to eat....and help fill you up so you are not as tempted to splurge.
ARe you on insulin? I'm only on insulin for fasting- but they gave me a Humalog pen for occasions just like this....she said she is fine for me to give myself a little extra insulin for a family's birthday party or special dinner. Haven't used it yet- but its there ready
Have fun! And don't stress about the food! This is going to be a fun day for you!!
I had GD over Christmas last time and had to face all those holiday parties and their goodies while on the diet. I did pretty well finding things to eat - like PP said, load up on veggies, cheese cubes, if there are deli meat rolls or something those can be a great choice. I managed to avoid desserts (a true miracle for this sweet tooth :P) except for Christmas dinner - I just didn't have any milk and only half my carbs with dinner so I could have a sliver of cheesecake, and my number was actually perfect!
And really, I vote it's okay to splurge on a small piece of cake for a special event, as long as your not making a habit of it. I will be GD over my birthday this year and you better believe I'm eating my birthday cupcake :P

I cheated and had cake at my best friend's wedding. My numbers were great. I would not worry so much about it. You are allowed to cheat every now and then. Cut yourself some slack and enjoy your shower. No sense in making yourself miserable when you are the guest of honor.
A cupcake w/ frosting (but not the 2 inch high frosting you see on some) is about 30g of carbs - which is on the high end of the snack range.
Whatever your poison is, I think you can make a small splurge work for a special event.
That said, last time around I skipped the cake at my shower. I was too chicken. This time around, there will be no shower, but you better believe there will be a cupcake on occasion.
