maternity swim wear

So I am needing to get a maternity bathing suit for this summer. Our first vacation I will be about 18 weeks along so probably not too big yet and the second vacation is going to be about 26 weeks along plus trips to the pool in the meantime. I obviously didnt need a maternity suit when I was pg with Nick so I have no idea what I will like.

Should I wait to buy on until I will really need one (probably at the earliest I will need one will be Memorial day wknd when our pool opens). The bathing suit I have from last year probably wont work b/c it is a shorter tankini and I dont want my bloat hanging out haha When you were pg what kind of bathing suit did you prefer-- one piece or tankini? If it makes a difference I am somewhat plus size (14/16). TIA!

Re: maternity swim wear

  • I got pregnant last May, and bought a maternity swimsuit right away just b/c I figured I'd want to wear maternity at some point during the summer even though I didn't need it right away, and I'm glad I did because the stock was slim by the end of May.  I remember going back in because I was unsure about the size I got, and they had very little to choose from just a couple weeks later, so I had no choice but to keep the size I had originally purchased.  It all worked out, as I started showing much sooner my third time around Stick out tongue.  Also, I had a tankini but it was a longer tankini with plenty of coverage.

  • For sizing did you pretty much buy something that fit you at the time and hoped that it grew with you or did you buy something a little big? I have no idea how big I'll actually be this time around since with Nicholas I lost 20lbs in the beginning and he was severely growth restricted so even at 37 weeks he was only the size of a 27 weeker...

  • I bought one pretty early and it worked great!  I would go ahead and get one now.  I had a pricey one and a pretty cheap one, both were great.  I would just wear the maternity swim suit right away, they look great on even with a smaller bump:)  Both mine were tankinis and that is what I would buy again if needed.

  • Yes, I just went with what fit best at the time.  The middle was a little big of course since I was newly pregnant at that point, but I was more concerned about finding something that fit my rear and my chest.  I wasn't too concerned that I would outgrow the middle since I was only halfway through pregnancy by the end of the summer.  Even if I had been hugely pregnant at that point, I don't think it would have been an issue since swimwear is stretchy.

  • I went to Motherhood last year and bought the least expensive suit on sale. I was going to wear it one season so who really cared, kwim? I wanted it cheap. Man was it ugly.

  • I bought a tankini when I was pregnant with DD and I LOVED it. I bought mine a size bigger than I would need and it worked great. It grew with me and when I went on vacation in Oct at 6.5-7 months pregnant I was SO glad I had it. They are great and worth the money!

  • I was hugely pregnant all summer. I had a regular bikini that I bought 1 size bigger that I wore at home when it was just us, but I had a tankini top that I wore from Target when anyone else was around. It was really hard for me to find anything that fit my chest. I'd look now and get something with a little room in the chest. The belly will stretch to fit.
  • I have a cute black and white tankini from when I was pg with Ethan from Motherhood.  Kohls also has a great selection of "plus" bathing suits especially online and they sell them as separates and they are longer tops so I actually think they will fit me through the pregnancy this summer.  They start at size 14 I think, I ordered a bunch online last year, tried them on at home, and then returned what I didn't like to the store.  I have one pink/black top and one turquoise/brown top, two swim skirts (one black, one brown).

I bought this one from Target last year and I plan on using it again.  I got a large for my bust (i wear a G cup)   It was a big saggy even at 9 months pregnant, but not horrid- and it covered my thighs which I am concerned about.  It's my hang up.  Anyway, I normally wear about a size 10 but this fit well enough and has a strap to go around my neck.  Plus I liked that my tan lines were oblivious!

Happy hunting! But go cheap!  We go to the houseboat every weekend and I refuse to pay good money for a bathing suit I'll use for a year or so.

  • I did what Moesten did and bought whatever was cheap at Motherhood. I was 17 weeks when I wore it and it was baggy in the belly, but it worked out for me. I just needed it for our vacation so I didn't really care what it looked like. But, maybe this year I will use it too, who knows!

  • I found one back in December on Old Navy's website for $7.  It's a 1 piece and not the cutest, but I couldn't pass up the price!

  • If I were you, I'd go ahead and buy one now.  I bought one in April the year I was pregnant with Tyler, and Kessler is right, they are slim pickings at the end of May.

I found one I loved at Old Navy for 20 bucks.  I didn't get a tankini, although they carry those, I'm definitely a one-piece kind of girl.  :)

just make sure your boobs fit, I was nearly falling out of mine by 26 weeks.  Embarrassed
