After several reschedules, I finally had the conversation with my boss this morning. I asked to be in the office for 3 short days and to WFH a few hours the other two days of the week, plus evenings and weekends for crunch times. It will total about 30ish hours a week, but it gives me the flexibility I need to grow my business and still see my children.
I used a lot of your suggestions, both for confidence going in and for the actual conversation. Thank so much for the ideas and support!
Re: Officially PT!!! Thanks for all your advice!
awesome! good for you!
That's fantastic!
I would love to know what you said to the boss - this is something we talk about DH doing at some point, dropping to 25-30 hours a week at his work, but we know his company is ALL about the bottom line, so we're trying to figure out how DH going to a less-than-full-time status would atually HELP them.... beyond the fact that they would save a few shekels paying him less than a full time salary...
ETA: to clarify, DH is billable, so him working less actually means his employer billing less and making less money... that's our challenge - how do you say to the boss "I want to work fewer hours which means the company makes less money" ?? Ideas?
Yay! That's so exciting. I love my 32 hour/week schedule. It sounds like this will be a great balance for you.
TTC #1 Cycle 14 - IUI#1=BFN, IUI#2=BFP | TTC #2 Cycle 8=BFP!!

our situations are a little different, in that, as a manager, i am only expected to be 75% billable. i'm not right now, so that made his agreement easier to come by. cutting my time by 25% essentially eliminates a majority of my non-billable time. plus, i still have to complete the same assignments, just in less time. i knew this going in, so i'm fine with it. i'd rather see my kids, ya know?
points that i made that resonated with his bottom line:
- more effective at home (fewer distractions), able to work evenings and weekends during crunch times
- assurance that WFH time would not double as parenting time (working during nap times or after bed time)
- higher % of billable time
- offered weekly "check-in" meeting
i basically mitigated his objections or concerns by addressing them in my plan upfront, before he could raise them. bc he's currently paying me FT when i'm only about 30% billable, it was a no-brainer. unfortunately, that's not your case.
I think i remember (sort of ) what your hubs does, and it's not possible for him to WFH, right? i'm not really sure how you sell that to his employer!
