Question about acne and face wash....

Hi,

I was doing some more reading today...and a lot the information that I come across is contradicting.

I have moderate acne and am 14 weeks pregnant tomorrow :)  I have been using a face wash that contains salicylic acid (.5 %).  Some things I've read said to stay away from products containing salicylic acid and others say that it's okay.  Just wondering your opinions.

thanks :)

Re: Question about acne and face wash....

  • My dr. okayed topical salicylic acid--I use Proactiv Extra Strength. It's the oral SA that you want to avoid.

  • I don't think it's that big of a deal honestly. I occasionally use a face wash with salicylic acid as well. I also started using Cetaphil, which has been recommended for use by PG ladies with acne, and that's been helping a lot too. You can research yourself to death, btw, and find all kinds of stuff they tell you to stay away from but, let's be real, how real are most of the "threats" anyways?  Anyways, just my opinion.

  • I've heard that a lot of gals doctor's have said that if it is topical (meaning a face wash) - you are putting it on for a brief moment and washing it off so it is safe.

FWIW, I used face wash with SA throughout my first pregnancy and DS is amazing :)

  • A face wash I wouldn't be too concerned with.  A lotion, I might ask my doctor if I had concerns.
  • My dermatologist perscribed me 5% Benzol Peroxide for my acne and my OB cleared it. Consult your OB and they will be able to tell you what you should/shouldn't use.
  • I have severe acne (sprang up over a year ago...worse than when I was a teenager).  I'm using Proactive and a topical prescription.  MW and dermatologist have cleared it.  I can't wait to have this kid and be done breastfeeding so I can get on the good stuff.

  • My OB and my Dermatologist have given me conflicting advice.  Ultimately, I went with my OB's recommendation which is that OTC products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide are okay.  I'm using Proactiv for now.

I've also used DDF's and Mario Badescu's glycolic foaming wash.  Everything I read indicated that glycolic was okay, but not as effective.

  • I would ask your Doc, mine told me not to use SA or BP.

  • Yuck, I would not put that on my face pregnant or not. All it does it perpetuate the acne cycle. Your skin is all natural, use all natural products on it.

  • Asked the doc...he said it's no problem...thanks for all the info!
