Mirena question

My doctor gave me the BCP run-down at my last appointment, so now i'm trying to weigh my options. If you have a Mirena, would you recommend it? Do you still get your period, and if so, is it noticeably shorter/lighter? Any problems with cysts?

I have Mirena and would definitely recommend it. I don't get periods anymore, I think I might have gotten 1 or 2 in the beginning then they stopped. The only side effect I've noticed is that I get headaches (and 1 migraine) more often than I remember ever having.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but all sides of Mirena should be explored here! I had the Mirena after Riley and after 6 straight months of bleeding, not spotting, bleeding, I had to have it removed. My Dr checked 4 times to make sure it was positioned right and there was nothing wrong with the positioning, some percentage of women just reject it!

Just fair warning that it isn't always as awesome as it may seem.....

Thank you for posting this. I'm debating between Mirena and just keeping up with the condoms. I have really bad issues with cysts in the past, and the pill is out, so just looking for others' experience with Mirena... positive or negative!

I love my Mirena so much. I love not having to remember birth control...it's just there, you know? I haven't had any side effects at all (except the desired one :P). I do still get my period but it is VERY light. Like hardly even noticeable. If I didn't still look at the TP after I wipe (sorry, maybe TMI?) I might not even know I have it. I haven't had any problems with cysts. HTH.

I have a few friends with it. One said the insertion was painful but after that she likes it. The other got awful headaches and got hers removed. My sister is on the Nuva Ring which might be another option. She loves it. It's shortened her period and she says it's as easy to insert as a tampon. I don't think a lot of people know about this but I'm thinking of using it after our next child is born.

Absolutely love the Mirena. I had it before I had my son because I feel sick on estrogen BCP. I lost my period almost immediately and got it back 6 weeks after the removal. We were pregnant another 6 weeks after that. I did not have cysts, headaches, or cramping (after the day they put it in). I would totally recommend it to anyone, but as "Debbie" said, it may not be for everyone. My aunt is an ob-gyn nurse practitioner and recommended Implanon (2-3 years and in your arm) as well. My ob doctor uncle has both of his daughters (yuck I know) on the nuvaring. As far as endorsements go, I will be getting another Mirena after our 2nd child. I didn't get one in between because it's not covered at all by my insurance. The cash price was too high to justify for a year or two. Happy researching!

I just wanted to say that I hated the NuvaRing. My hair got so thin after I started using it (I normally have really thick hair) and it made my sex drive decrease a LOT! Who needs bc when you don't have a sex drive to begin with? Just my $0.02.

I am so glad I got mine removed! I had no periods at all for the year I had it, but had horrible painful ovarian cysts. The pain was sometimes so bad that I couldn't walk. I also had the dreaded weight gain, breaking out, and hair loss.

Now that it's out, the cysts are gone, and I'm feeling much better!
