I?m 19 weeks pregnant with my 3rd baby. My first was born in Oct 2008, I ended up with a C-section because his heart rate was dropping when I was pushing because his umbilical cord was being pinched between his head and my bone. My doctor said I could either have a c-section or let my epidural wear off and then try pushing again, but he recommended c-section because he said that would be the safest for the baby. So I decided to have the c-section. I didn?t know anything about vbacs and honestly it didn?t even cross my mind at the time.
I got pregnant again in July 2009 and had my 2nd baby in March 2010. I planned on having a RCS until my 7th month of pregnancy when I decided that I wanted to try a vbac. My doctor said that was fine and he scheduled an induction for my due date if I didn?t go into labor before that time. About 2 weeks before my due date, he told me he would be out of town for the next 2 weeks and there?s only 1 other doctor in his practice that does vbacs so if I went into labor while he was gone, I would probably have to have a c-section if that other doctor wasn?t on call. I decided that I would just have a c-section right then before he went out of town so that he could do it and I didn?t have to have a stranger do a c-section on me. If I was going to have to have a c-section, I at least wanted to feel comfortable with the doctor who was doing it. Again, I wasn?t educated about vbacs and I didn?t really think about the next one.
I wasn?t planning on having another baby anytime soon, but I found out I was pregnant again in Dec 2010 and I?m due in August. I?m really excited and I was planning on having another c-section because I thought that I would have to because i?ve already had 2. I talked to my sister about it after 2 or 3 doctor appointments and she told me that ACOG had new guidelines that say I could have a vbac even with 2 previous c-sections. She told me to get educated and do lots of research before my next appointment and then talk to my doctor about it if it?s what I want. I was so excited to find out that I might actually be able to have a vbac!!
Well, my appointment was yesterday and I was told that they are the only office in town that does vbacs (which I knew) BUT they only do vbacs and not vba2c. I was so disappointed. This office is my only option because of my insurance so I can?t switch doctors. The doctor did tell me that they can?t force me to have a c-section, but she also said she wont agree to let me have a vba2c. She said it?s against their office policy.
My next appointment is in a month and it?s with a different doctor in the practice that she told me was the most vbac friendly doctor they have at the office. I?m hoping she?ll at least consider letting me try but I?m not counting on it.
My main question is what do I do if I?m told again that I can?t have a vbac and they want me to sign a c-section consent? Like I said, this is the only doctor I can go to with my insurance so I?m worried that if I refuse to sign the consent that they?ll refuse to see me. I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions would be very helpful!!
Re: New here with vba2c question
Are there any birth centers in your area that offer VBAC? I will be having my baby at a freestanding birth center under the care of a certified nurse midwife. I know other moms have had homebirth VBACs as well, but I realize out of hospital birth (whether birth center or home birth) isn't something everyone is comfortable with.
I think it is silly that the practice does VBAC but not VBA2C. The risk of rupture for a VBA2C is about 1% --- with a VBA1C it's about .05%, I believe, depending on the study you look at. Maybe they'll revise their policy? Like you said, ACOG is on your side.
GL!
I checked ICAN's website for my hospital and it says they do allow VBAMC. So I think it's just the office that I'm going to. But maybe I'll double check with the hospital.
