Dear LO,
If you ever choose to bully a kid at school; repeatedly punching him in the face and said kid chooses to body slam you, I will not sue. Nor will I go on tv and demand an apology from said kid. I will presume you have learned a lesson.
If you ever choose to threaten your classmates and teacher with a wooden plank and the police spray you with mace after you refuse to drop said wooden plank, I will not sue. Nor will I bring you on Good Morning America and complain that the police should have talked to you more about what was wrong and why you were behaving that way. I will presume you have learned a lesson.
P.S. I love you
ugh. Can you tell I'm a little annoyed at the parents coddling their children when they behave poorly and (gasp!) they are consequences?
Re: Open letter to my unborn baby
Hahaha. I totally agree.
I saw a news story about a month ago on Yahoo. The story was about this mom who went on the news complaining about her sons teacher's "unethical methods."
She stapled a disciplinary slip on the boys shirt because he was talking in class. (The boy is constantly talking in class and doesn't ever learn his lesson)
The lady is now saying that the teacher overstepped her boundaries and ridiculed the kid in front of his classmates.
If that were my son I would of said, "well, maybe you shouldn't had been talking!" This is ridiculous...teachers have a hard enough time as it is....it's not like she beat the kid.
From a parent perspective, if my kid deserves to be reprimanded, so be it.
However from a teacher perspective, that action borderlines on corporal punishment which is against the law and the parent is justified in saying that the teacher overstepped their bounds. These days you are not even suppose to make a child stand in the hall for a minute to cool off for safety reasons and corporal punishment..... its a changed world in teaching.....
WHAT! wow, i didn't know any of that.
I'm only 22 and when I was in elementary school teachers were still allowed to hit us with rulers. Hell, my brothers teacher used to slap them in the back of the head if they acted up in class lol. Of course, I went to elementary school in Puerto Rico not directly in the U.S.
That's ridiculous to me though. Not everyone disciplines their child at home and teachers have their hands tied behind their backs....I can't imagine their frustration considering that it seems like all these regulations basically let kids do and get away with whatever they want.
Yeah it is. My mom was beat with a ruler way back when...
The coddling annoys me. I knew if I acted up in school, my parents were ALWAYS going to be on the teacher's side. I think a united front is important. If the teacher's wrong, deal with that behind closed doors. It's important for kids to go to school every day respecting their teachers.
If my kids are EVER caught bullying, they can pack up all their nice name-brand things and we will personally hand-deliver them to the kid they are bullying. I absolutely will not tolerate it.

Haha when I lived in Texas, we could still get sent to the office for a paddlin'. God bless Texas.

This makes me sad. Teachers have no recourse and the parents just complain about everything. What are you supposed to do when these kids misbehave?
Ridiculous. Take solstice in the fact that that little shiit is going to get his ass kicked on the regular in high school.

We just had a case in a neighboring school (I teach in NYC) where a student was told to 'sit down and close your mouth' by his treacher. Said student went home and told his mommy dearest that the teacher used a scary voice. the mom reported it and the teacher was put on leave while it was investigated. All of the other students told the administration that the teacher did not say it in a scary voice and that the boy never listens and bullies other students.
My princpial has told us that it is not our job to correct behavior even if it interferes with teaching. We are there solely to teach. Okay, a$$hole, how am I supposed to teach with a kid that will not shut up? Or, how about when there are 7 or 8 of those kids in your classroom?
lmao! so true.
my friend is i mentioned before is an elm art teacher had an assistant at her school who got fired. it was the end of the day and the kids were headed towards the buses and this little 2nd grader's back-pack fell to the ground. the assistant picked it up for her and knelt down to help her get it on her back and after it was placed she just tapped both of the shoulders to make sure they were secure and gave her a smile...well a parent saw that and complained it was "inappropriate touching" and she was fired - i hate that because sometimes it just meant the world to me to be able to hug my favorite teacher and have a nice hug back...now its like they can't put one finger on them...
I don't know which is more ridiculous...the fact that the parent overreacted or that the school proceeded by terminating the assistant. I'm all for vigilance in protecting children against abuse, but come on.
I totally agree with you on the Bullying part. I was so proud of that kid when i heard that on the news. I had no idea the parent was demanding an apology. screw her
As for the pepper spray incident, i admit. I'd be PISSED. I understand discipline but i think that went a little far. Having said that, i really wish spanking was still allowed in school
When I was working on the ambulance we had a teenager who got drunk at a party, threw something through a window, and then ran from the police. When the police caught up with him, he was standing on top of a fence, throwing large rocks and yelling threats at him. They tased him. The kid fell, and broke his jaw. All of us were really nervous, because the kids dad was a big name personal injury attorney.
While we were in the ER getting the kid patched up, dad walks in, still in his "lawyer suit" and carrying a briefcase. He asked what happend, the officer told him, and the dad looked at the kid and said "Well, dumb@ss, I guess you know why I always told you not to cause trouble, and, if you do, don't run from the cops." Then he turned to the officer, thanked him for his service, and told them to have a good night.

That's funny. And kind of awesome.

EXACTLY!!!
i know - at that point i lost all confidence in our school system and i'm pretty sure, how some parents can be towards others in every day life...i will probably have child services called on me for some stupid reason - i'm all about having your opinions but sheesh
