Tell me about your induction...

I can't believe I'm still pregnant.  For reals.  Neither can my Dr. for that matter.  I know I'm not even to my due date yet, but yowza.  Anyhow, my next Dr. appt is Friday and the plan is if he's still in there, we'll induce this weekend.  (The reason for inducing at week 39 also has to do with some complications there were during my last delivery, so it's not like she is taking him early just to take him early).

I can't decide how much research I want to do on inductions, since I know there are risks and you have a higher chance to end up with a c-section.  But I figured I'd ask you wonderful ladies what your experiences were, if you were induced.

I had some Pitocin last time, but it was after my water had already broken on it's own but my contractions had delayed.

Getting nervous!

  • I'll give you the quick version here, and if you care to read the full thing my birth story is linked below.

Started at 1 cm, 0% effaced (where I'd been for 3+ weeks).

1:30 am - Cytotec (Misoprostal) administered (and by that, I mean shoved up by my cervix)

3:00 am - Contracting every 2.5-3 minutes.  Not super painful, but uncomfortable.

5:30 am - Checked by doc... 3 cm, 80% effaced

9:30 am - Checked again, not much progress.  Started on a light Pitocin drip

    12:30 pm - Epidural

1:00 pm - Checked again... fully dilated and effaced.  Started pushing.

3:33 pm - Lila was born.

  • I was induced at 39w. I think that it is a completely personal decision and if you feel you are willing to give it a go and your Dr feels you are ready then do what is right for your family. Don't worry about explaining "why" to anyone, it is YOUR decision! :) I think people get way too much flack for doing something that is right for their own bodies/families and is in the grand scheme of things pretty dang safe.

My experience was at 5:00pm the night before the induction they inserted a catheter and a balloon to try to dilate a bit. At the time I was not effaced nor dialated at all. I contracted throughout the night but it stopped in the morning. I checked in to the hosp at 6am and the pitocin was started at 7:30. I contracted all day stalling at about a 4 for a few (4-5 I think) hours. At 10:00p I got the epidural and was at a 10 within an hour. 4 pushes later Cam was born at 11:32.

If you go into it with no grand expectations of what your birth experience "should" be I feel you have a better outcome. I think when you have an expected plan you are possibly setting yourself up for disappointment.  You can give the meds a try and you dont progress, so be it. You can wait it out and see if you go into labor naturally or if you have to have a c/s to get the baby out, again oh well! It wouldnt always be ideal but in the end you have your outside baby, no matter what route he/she gets here.

    Good luck!

  • I was induced at 39 weeks with both my kids.

Livi's induction was just over 12 hours. When I got to the hospital I was 1 cm dilated. They started pitocin and broke my water. Got an epidural when I was 5 cms. Pushed for 2 hours.

Ian I was 3 cms when I got to the hospital. Doctor broke my water at 1:45 pm had an epidural by 3 pm he was out at 6:41pm with maybe 15 mins of pushing.

Both my inductions were great experiences. If I were to have a third I'd ask my OB to induce me again :)

  • Since you want both sides Stick out tongue, my water broke on its own at 6 p.m., began pitocin about midnight, had a c-section of 1330 because of failure to progress.  Sammy wouldn't drop and I couldn't produce contractions on my own.  Hope it goes smoothly what ever happens!

  • I have heard more positive than negative induction stories, but mine is a not fabulous story. Bulb catheter inserted on Friday, admitted Saturday night and pitocin started, epi late Sunday afternoon, water broken right after that, stalled at around 8cm for a few hours, his heart rate dropped and I was bleeding profusely ended up with an emergency c-section and he was born at 2:21am Monday morning. I would never have been able to deliver him, but it all ended with a happy healthy baby and that is all that matters.

  • I was induced at 38 weeks due to serious blood pressure ups and downs. 4pm they used a catheter and inserted a balloon. I had small contractions all night. Went in to the hospital 6am, began Pitocin at 7am. Contractions started and consistently got stronger. I didn't have an epidural but went with two doses of pain killer. By 3pm I started pushing and at 455p Camryn was born. They did need to use the vacuum to get her out as she couldn't seem to get over my pelvic bone.

As the other ladies said, it is your decision and there is no reason to justify yourself to anyone. Good luck!

  • Warning: typing on iPhone. I was induced at 38 weeks, 4 days due to being a high risk pregnancy (bp issues). ?I honestly didn't know it could take so long for an induction to work. ?I was hopeful that I'd have a baby on Nov 11 or 12 but he came at 7:30 am on Nov 13. Here's how it went down: 11/11/10 12:00 pm arrived at hospital 2:00ish pm saw dr on call (my ob was on vacation but he didn't want to wait to induce me when he go back due to bp issues), decision made to give me Cervadil. Only at 1 cm which I had been at for the last week or so 4 pm Cervadil given 11/12/10 4:30 am Cervadil taken out, cervix recheck. Still 1 cm dilated, 50% effaced 6 am 2nd Cervadil put in 8 am Cervadil taken out due to baby showing signs of distress 10 am low dose Pitocin started 10 am - 8 pm Pitocin doses gradually increased along with contractions (at 8 pm 2 cm dilated, 80% effaced) 10 pm contractions start getting more intense 11 pm contractions even more intense & close together (2-3 mins), Pitocin adjusted as needed 11/13/10 2 am 5 cm dilated 3 am epidural - HEAVEN! 3 am - 5:15 am - sleep 5:30 am start pushing 7:30 am baby born

  • I was induced at 34w5d due to pre-e and an IUGR baby. I had a really good experience as far as inductions go. Here's the run down -

3AM - Pitocin is started. I'm not in labor on my own at all at this point.

    7AM - Dr. breaks baby A's water.

Slowly progress throughout the day. I tried to keep moving my bouncing on the ball, rocking in a rocking chair, squatting to help progress etc.

    3PM - 5CM dilated

    4PM - Get epidural

5PM - 10CM dilated. Do a few practice pushes and call doctor to come to hospital.

5:20PM - Wheeled to operating room. (where all twins are delivered)

    5:30PM - Baby A born

    5:31PM - Baby B born

  • Mine straight up sucked. I was induced at 41w. We were supposed to check in tp L&D at 9:30am, they didn't have any beds open until 4pm (this was March 17). Got all checked in and settled, and checked by nurses and doctors a few times. I wasn't dilated or effaced at all when I went in. About 5 they started Misoprostyl, 4 hours later, still nothing. They started me on Cervidil, after 12 hours, still no progress. I got to take a shower real quick after they took it out and ate breakfast, then they started me on Pitocin (By this time it was late morning on Mar 18) They came back to check periodically through out the day and still nothing. No contractions. No dilation. They increased the pitocin incrementally through out the day and monitored contractions. I started having more and more, but my cervix was still closed and high (baby hadn't dropped), they eventually turned it down because I was having too many contractions. I went to sleep (by now it's late night Mar 18/early morning Mar 19) and the nurse came in and cranked the pitocin from a 12 to a 16 without saying anything or waking me up prior to doing it, which caused very painful contractions and still no dilation. I woke up crying from the pain, DH went and got a nurse because mine was apparently on break or something (she was from hell anyway), they gave me some pain meds and I was able to go back to sleep for a couple of hours. (Now morning of the 19th) The AM doctor and nurse came in to check my cervix and I had finally dilated 1cm (woohoo!) they broke my water about 7:30am, had me get up and go to the bathroom, then about 8:15am I had an epidural and a catheter (which really made my day miserable, the anesthesiologist didn't wait quite long enough for the local stuff to kick in so I felt everything ). I was all numb and able to sleep in between being checked every few hours. I quickly progressed up to almost 5cm, then was stuck there for a while. The nurses kept having me switch the side i was laying on, and eventually the catheter got jiggled a certain way and became extremely painful for the rest of the day. By 7pm the epidural had completely worn off, and I was given a 2nd one, which went much smoothly and far less painful than the first, but the bag ran empty shortly after (which sucked more). I started having more serious contractions that I could feel about 8:30pm, started pushing about 9:30pm and LO was born at 10:34pm

(Sorry about the formatting, LO is being extra snuggly right now)
