Potty training at home vs. daycare - advice?

So the main 2 year old teacher has been putting S in underwear and he's been staying dry all day for her.  She told me she doesn't even ask him to use the potty anymore, he does it on his own.  I'm so proud of him for that!

Here's where I'm confused and need advice though... He is the total opposite at home.  For instance on Saturday, he wanted to wear underwear instead of a pull up so I put underwear on him and reminded him to keep them dry and to tell me if he had to go potty.  Throughout the day, I suggested he use the potty several times and he would tell me no, but then pee just a few minutes later.  This went on all day.  I've always read not to force your LO to use the potty - when I ask him to go and he says no, what am I supposed to do?  What am I doing wrong?

Re: Potty training at home vs. daycare - advice?

  • when he pees after you ask him to is it on the floor or in the potty?

I think at daycare there are other kids there and kind of a peer pressure to use the potty if his friends are using it.

  • Loading the player...
  • If DD is in underwear, I don't ask her if she needs the potty, I just say "its time to sit on the potty" - so she can't say no.

He just stands there and pees where ever he is at the moment so it soaks through and goes to the floor.

I've tried that as well - phrasing it so it's not really a question but he says "no potty."  I've even taken his hand and tried to lead him to the potty and he falls to the floor so I would be dragging him if I continued.  He is THAT stubborn.

  • It sounds like DCP doesn't even mention it at all.  Have you tried not reminding him at all?  That way, it's totally his idea.

That's going to be my next approach I think.  I'm not sure if S is unique in this regard, but sometimes the more I want him to do something, the more he resists.  He keeps me on my toes for sure!

I would try not mentioning it.  If that doesn't work try a timer.  That way it isn't you telling him.
