let's talk about the government shutdown

I hope non of you are waiting on a passport

https://money.cnn.com/2011/04/04/news/economy/shutdown_faq/index.htm?hpt=T2

Which services would stop? During the last major shutdowns in the final days of 1995 and early 1996, the government closed 368 National Park Service sites, along with national museums and monuments.

In addition, 200,000 passport applications went unprocessed and toxic waste cleanup work at 609 sites stopped. The National Institutes of Health stopped accepting new clinical research patients and services for veterans, including health care, were curtailed.

Work on bankruptcy cases could slow. In the last shutdown, more than 3,500 cases were delayed.

A lot of military families are concerned about this. They're saying they will still have to report for duty without a paycheck on the 15th.

  • This may work to my advantage.  DH is working evenings at the top of the Arch and it sucks.

I could help the situation out, cut 5% from everything and add a tax bracket.  Walla!

  • Crap. Hopefully this does not affect my Permanent Resident renewal application. Sent it two weeks ago. I don't think they can shut that area down as it's national security.

DHS is being affected by the shut down, which would include your application.

I think it's all around pathetic that a bunch of grown adults can't come to a logical solution. This country is a mess sometimes. Like I said in a previous post...I feel very bad for the government wage workers who don't make Capital Hill salaries. They're the ones who can't afford to work and not get paid. ::sigh::

Totally agree! Something tells me that they are going to come close to the Friday deadline but everything will be ok.

  • It's actually though USCIS. Not Department of Health Services. Oh well, maybe it's just new aps. Mine is already in (on time I might add) to have the conditions lifted on my PR card. They better send me a receipt. I will call them today.

Crap.  Husband is military, so I've been so concerned about making sure our financial ducks are in a row just in case, that I didn't even think about this.

I applied to have my conditions lifted, and I got the receipt last week.  I've been happily skipping down to the mailbox to check for my ACS appointment notice not even considering that it might be delayed due to this.  CRAPCRAPCRAP!!!

As the processing times show a wait of 6 months anyway, I don't think you'll be affected unless there's a shut down for a long time

I confirmed by phone and internet that USCIS will not shut down due to it being primarily funded by application fees. They might be a slow-down in processing time but you have your receipt.

How long did it take your receipt to arrive after you filed? We sent ours to the CA processing center which I heard has a 30 day max time frame. No receipt yet but the lasy on the phone said it should arrive any day now.

HA!  I am on hold with USCIS now, I was about to ask them the same question!

I got my receipt exactly a week after I mailed my package, but I filed through the Vermont processing center, and they're usually really fast.

I'm waiting for the ACS appointment because I want to stay with my family while my husband goes on TDY....and it's probably not a great idea to leave the country before I get my fingerprints done!

Here's hoping your receipt comes soon!  Have they cashed the check yet?  Mine came the day after that.

You need to check with your attorney - its usually not advised to leave the country while an application is pending.

  • Thanks, I appreciate the concern.  I am already a permanent resident with no travel restrictions, this application is to remove the conditions of residence.  My greencard is still valid for work and travel for another year.  I checked into this pretty carefully because I tend toward paranoia

I do have to carry the extension letter with me if I choose to leave the country though!

Yeah. I also recommend not leaving the country if this is your inital application. Or if you have an expired conditional permanent resident status. But your fine if you have your authorization to travel and work befoe getting your actual card.

My husband is checking into the issue for us and I will update for anyone else needing it. I know there are a few PR's on here that also needs this information.

Ok. Were in the same boat. You should be fine to travel with your extension letter (receipt). Perhaps they will waive the biometrics for both of us and just send us the cards!!!! Weeee....

If you receipt came within 7 days (and CA service center is equally as quick from what I read) I should be seeing my receipt Thursday or Friday. That would be fantastic.

Did you ever find out why we have to pay a second biometrics fee? What are they looking for? I can't imagine their doing the whole FBI search again.

I live in the DC metro. I would guess that 75% of families would somehow be affected, either directly or indirectly.  Everyone is preparing here.  People have canceled vacations to DC because they could not tour the landmarks or museums.  That affects restaurants, hotels, taxis, etc.

Oh, I believe that people are preparing.  I'm trying to ignore it for the time being because I really don't need the extra stress right now.  DH's company hasn't sent out any emails about it, so it's possible they have overhead pay they plan on using, who knows.  I know my old company has already laid off thirty engineers, though.

  • I have been told not to report to work if the budget doesn't get passed, and I will have to take vacation without pay. We barely make enough to get by as it is, and this would be a huge blow to us.

The Military is also preparing for coming to work, and not getting paid as well.

I'm blaming the tea baggers on this one.  It's their pressure on the conservatives that is holding this up.  Dems already agreed to more than 50% of the proposed cuts.  Why is that not enough for a compromise?
You can't just blame one side. They are all a bunch of incompetent nincompoops incapable of compromise. They are all looking forward to 2012 instead of focusing on now, which is sad. One would hope that the two groups could just come together and do what is best for the country rather that pick each over apart and point fingers.

One of my current state legislators made a really valid statement. He said that politicians have gotten so worried about keeping their jobs, they are afraid to say no to things, even though it's not what is best for our state/country.  He said that voters need to be prepared to support candidates that say no at this time realizign we have to take the time to fix things.  Although I don't like him, I agree with this thoughts. I hate that in so many instances I feel like it's more about re-election than what really needs to happen.

My job is more affected by all the shenanigans going on in California with flower power Brown wanting to eliminate redevelopment agencies since I work for a city. Pretty much every position in my department is partially funded by redevelopment funds so really who knows what will happen if he's successful. It may be time for me to pack up and move on to the private side soon.

I haven't heard anything, but I imagine Medicare will be somewhat impacted. Medicaid is administered at the state level, so that could vary greatly.
