desperately need bottle advice

Hi mamas,

So i have been successfully breast feeding my LO since birth, but the problem is that whenever I want to get out for a little  and someone else watches him he wont take the bottle. As soon as we put the bottle in his mouth he screams something awful. It's been with both breast milk and formula. We use the avent bottles..do you think it could be the nipple?  My family and I are going down to VA for my best friends wedding and my LO is going to have to stay with daddy while I help the bride and Im afraid he wont take the bottle, and therefore make himself and my DH miserable!

Please help ! Confused

  • we use the tommee tippee and MJ loves those.

Also I've heard that sometimes it's easier if mom is not around.  Baby can smell your BM and may reject the bottle.  Maybe try to go out for a couple hours while dad feeds LO and see if that helps.

  • We tried the Dr. Browns, Avent, Tommee Tippee, Playtex vent air and Playtex drop-ins. LO loves the drop-ins as they are closer to breastfeeding than the others.  He was a nightmare with the other, rooting around like something frantic!

  • We use the dr.browns and have had no problems with those. Does your LO like the soothie pacis? Soothies makes bottles too which are pretty close to a real nipple that your LO may like. I would suggest buying singles of a few different ones they are usually under $5, try one at a time until you find one LO likes and return the un-opened ones, if you have any that you didn't need to try out.

  • Have you tried expressing some of the milk out of the nipple and putting it on his lips? It could be something as simple as he doesn't realize what is in the bottle. Or, like you said, it could be the nipple. DS flat out refuses to eat from a latex nipple and he is bottle fed now so babies definitely have their preferences.
  • We had the same problem. We tried everything and she fought it and choked. Today I bought the breastflow by First Years bottle and she took it INSTANTLY with no fight.  It is amazing!  It is designed more like a breast.  The surface around the nipple is wider (like a breast) and the nipple is smaller.  Plus it has an inner nipple that baby has to compress (just like when they nurse) in order for the milk to come out of the exterior nipple.  It slows the flow and baby doesn't choke.  I highly recommend it!
  • We use Dr Brown's and DD only has a problem if I feed her, but if anyone else feeds her out of the bottle she is completely fine with it.

  • We use the Playtex Ventaire and the Breastflow by First Years, and have with no problems.  Although, I will qualify, the playtex bottle- we initially tried the regular flow nipple and DS took the bottle WAY too fast, choked, and then spit up everything.  However, using the ventaire wide bottle with the slow flow nipple seemed to make all the difference for him.  I'd make sure you are not only trying different bottle brands but trying different nipples as well.  A lot of LO's have problems with standard nipples (regular flow) when they are used to BF because when they pause at the breast, milk stops flowing.  When they pause while on a bottle, milk does not always stop flowing.  It is hard for them to control the flow with a bottle that does not have a slow flow nipple at times.  Also, make sure that when you are trying the bottle that you are able to squeeze some milk out of the nipple prior to giving it to LO.  Sometimes the hole is not punctured through all the way and then they are going to town on the nipple and not getting anything and getting super frustrated.  (Also-same thing for formula or BM/formula with rice cereal, although rice cereal won't come through a slow flow nipple- you'd have to likely get a crosscut)....

  • We use the Dr. Browns with a slow flow nipple. We tried the Breastflow, but to be honest, I hated it more than DD. No matter what I did, the lid leaked. Like PP said, squeeze out a little of the BM from the nipple so LO knows what's there. Also, I warmed the nipple the first couple times. I don't know if it helped, but it didn't hurt.
  • Buy 1 of a few different brands to see what baby likes. We have a few different kinds and dd only likes playtex dropins. She wont take the others. The nipples are different for every brand.
