NBR: C25K Ladies

Hello ladies, long time no talk to. Life has been rather crazy at my house with 4 children, but things are finally starting to settle down. Not to mention I had to take a break from the site from my own "baby fever" that was driving me mad!

So, my question is for anyone that did the C25K. I just downloaded the app with GPS for my iphone and I'm going to start it tomorrow. My question is, did you do your running in the AM or PM? See I go to work at 8:30am, get home at 5:30pm and then have to make dinner for 4 kids and get them ready for the next day. Ideally, I would love to do it at night, but I just don't see the time. But then because I don't go to bed until later, the thought of losing some sleep to wake up earlier is not my cup of tea either. I know after a few days I will be fine with waking up earlier, and it's only 3 days a week, but how did you get yourself motivated? I have music all downloaded to my phone and I really really want to do it, because although I loathe running, I want to love it and I think this really could be my break for it. Thx in advance for any advice ladies.

  • I did it with two of my coworkers, so we ran at lunch.  Surely it wasn't ideal since you get very hot and probably should have a shower afterwards.  Our excuse was that the other three people who worked with us were smokers, so we've put up with their lovely smell long enough, they can deal with it for 10 weeks.  We used shower wipes (like a wet wipe but larger) and changed our clothes afterwards.

  • I haven't done the specific C25K, but if I was in your situation I think I would wake up a little early to do it, that way you make sure to get it done and you're not too tired.

I have to run in the afternoons because I start work at 4 am, but sometimes it's hard to stay motivated after working all day when I just want to relax and hang out with my baby!

  • The first marathon I ran after walter was born I did most of my running at night after he went to bed.  I would make dinner, get the house ready for the next day and then put him to bed and run.  I'd eat dinner after 10pm and go to bed even later.

THe next marathon I ran I did most of my training in the morning.  I would wake up at 5:30 and it was an amazing start to my day.  I also had some friends I met up with for some accountability so that helped.  I suggest getting in to a morning habit now because the weather is decent.  When it turns in the winter it's miserable to try to get up at 5:30 and go out in the cold and rain.  It's not the right time to start a routine.

Can your DH take 1 night a week to do dinner for you?  I had 1 night where I would bring my clothes and run right after work so I'd get home just in time for dinner.  You could also try a crock pot or take out 1 night so that extra 30-45 minutes you run dinner is already taken care of.

    Good Luck!

  • I never did C25k either (I wish I had known about it when I started). With your schedule it sounds like it will be much easier for you to do it in the morning, unless you can get your DH to make dinner for you a couple times a week. I will probably have to switch to morning work outs after my LO arrives. Try to set a reward for yourself after you complete the program. That will help motivate you to get up in the mornings. I always feel good when I actually get up in the am to work out too. If no one is doing it with you tell a couple people you are doing it. They'll ask you how it is going so you'll feel held accountable.

It gets easier I promise. I love running now and I used to hate it.

I run with a friend. It's the only way that I can do it. I wouldn't have finished the program without her!

I think that with your work schedule, kids, and home life, you need to train in the morning. It takes a lot of energy to start a workout routine, and I can't see how you would be able to fit it in at night.

I started in C25K August and finished in November. I run in the morning because I can't motivate myself to run in the evenings. I am so glad I started when I did, but I wish I would have started sooner. I cannot tell you how hard it was to just continue to run 3 days a week during the winter. It was miserable, so start now. That way, you'll have plenty of time to get your lungs and muscles in shape.

I still run twice a week, and yesterday I ran 3.5 miles. I felt on top of the world, and I think I could have kept going. I used to not be able to run for a minute straight. Now, I can go for an hour. Good luck. This program is totally worth it!
