Vacation Ideas

We are struggling for vacation ideas for our family.  Our older DS is 14yo and our new LO is 3 months old.  I do not want to go on family vacation and leave the LO behind.  We would entertain the thought of taking a friend for 14yo DS.

Any ideas on a good vacation for a family with such an age spread.  We know this year LO will just sit in his stroller most of the time.

We did a cruise last summer before we knew I was expecting.  We live on the coast in NC so going to the beach does not really appeal to our family.  We prefer to drive - will drive up to 8 hours to reach a good destination.

Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Jamestown settlement, Monticello (okay bit further afield there)

Check on timing of the Spoleto Festival in Charleston.  Charleston is a fun city.

    Savannah

    Smoky Mountain National Forest

Asheville -- I think they have lots of festivals and there's the mansion there that is amazing

    Hershey, PA

    Amish country, PA

Washington, DC -- the Smithsonian Museums are AMAZING and you can get a tour of the White House if you apply to your state senator/rep soon enough

ETA:  thought of a new one -- Chincoteague/Assateague.  On July 4th weekend, they have their wild pony roundup.  Crowded but heard it's fun.

  • May I say that there are some lovely state parks in Virginia and West Virginia.  Many of them are ski lodges so summer is off season for them.

  • We love, love, love Asheville. We stayed at the Willow Winds Cabins last year for vacation and it was fabulous!

  • Thank you everyone for the terrific ideas.  I will give them to my vacation planner (also known as my husband) to start looking into.

We had been thinking about Washington, DC - our 14yo would love the museums.  We went to the Air & Space one out at Dulles last February when we were in that area for a hockey tournament.  We all enjoyed that.
