D.C. Area Babies

diaper changing intervention

so DS has been a wiggle worm for months with diaper changes and I have just dealt with it, but it has come to a new level, he flails his legs all around, tries to flip over and LAUGHS as he does it..I typically end up with poop all over me, his legs and often the surrounding area...not fun

here are things I have tried:

changing him on a changing table and floor (trying to pin him down on the floor)

giving him a toy only for diaper changes

letting him "help" by holding onto diaper cream

singing to him

saying NO! when he does purposively flails around

Its not I can repremand him by leaving him in a poopy diaper...is this just a phase, because I know none of us, ENJOY diaper changes, but I really lothe them at this point, they are such a struggle....DS is 15 months

I am open to any suggestions.please help!!!!

Re: diaper changing intervention

  • this is the reason we started timeouts.  One minutes left alone in his crib* with the door shut and us out of site does the trick every time.

*I would suggest somewhere besides the crib b/c he won't sleep in (not that he ever did, but now he hates) it

  • Loading the player...
  • did you finish the change and then do the time out, or just close the diaper back up as is....
  • I assume it's just a phase, since DS went through two similar ones.  As soon as I put him on the changing table, he knew what was coming and started the antics.  So I'd get his pants off but leave his diaper on, and I'd let him flail/roll/laugh/whatever to get it out of his system.  Then I'd show him it was time for business, and he'd usually let me clean him up and change him with little protest.  It made diaper changes last a few extra minutes, and I didn't like condoning the behavior.  But he was just having fun, and it was one of those battles I wasn't going to fight.  Hopefully your DS will outgrow it in the coming weeks.

he usually starts before we even got to the changing table, so either I got just his pants off and left him in the diaper or left him fully clothed and put him in.

  • DS is 10mo old and has been in this phase for months w/ no end in sight. He literally tries to roll off and jump off the table, it's ridiculous!!

If he is grunting, I put him on the potty and he loves pooping on the potty, he'll often pee too. But I still need to put a clean diaper on him. This just makes it a little cleaner.

  • Tickling works really well for C. For us, it definitely comes in waves. A few weeks/days with no fighting and then a couple days of all out wrestling matches.

  • X has been doing this for at least a couple of months now...it's worse at night and out of control sometimes.  I have tried everything and now just go with the flow.  Hope you find something that works.  Just wait until he can run away from you!

  • We send her to change her own diaper.  Our "big helper" goes and gets a diaper and wipes.  Then she holds the diaper until change is almost done.  We then wrap up the dirty diaper really well.  She throws it away and then gets to wash her hands at the sink.  She LOVES washing her hands.  Our DCP began doing this when she was getting fussy for her and it works for us too (about 75% of the time at least).

  • A mom in my LLL group puts her LO on her tummy and changes her that way. The kiddo plays on her tummy while she gets a new diaper.
