how r u attending to belly button?

my nurses at the hospital told me that they no longer clean the umbilical cord stump with anything, she told me not to put anything on it.... I have not read this anywhere else... It should be falling off soon but the other day there was a tiny bit of bleeding- now its dry blood- I have given baby a sponge bath since then... I am just worried that It needs SOMEThing?

Re: how r u attending to belly button?

  • The hospital told me the same thing but her pediatrician told me to clean it with alcohol wipes. It has fallen off now but that was what recommended. I never did clean it with alcohol, just soap and water.

  • I was just at the ped today and she said to just leave it alone.  Baby Hawaii's is still attached and is kind of "oozy" underneath (she was trying to see how close it was to falling off).  She said it was normal and that unless it gets really "***" or smells, nothing needs to be done, but you're not suppose to let it soak in water either.
  • We were told to use alcohol and hers fell off at about 3 weeks, it was a little oozy after and then a major blowout happened and it was EVERYWHERE!!! I freaked that it went into her bb so i had to wash the poop and ooze out of it, now it's just teeny bit scabby. You LO should be ok though if you haven't used anything yet and it's not oozy or stinky like pp said.

  • I was wondering the same thing.  DS has had a tiny bit of blood come from the underside of his.  I think it's because he loves to lay on his belly on our chests and he will push himself up your chest, probably irritating it.  I wasn't sure if we should clean it with anything so that it doesn't get infected, or just leave it alone.

  • We cleaned with alcohol twice a day and it fell off in his sleep around 2 weeks. Didn't bleed or anything.
  • My pedi told me to clean it with alcohol at every diaper change. She even said use a q-tip to get under it. It is still attached but it doesnt bleed or smell or do anything else. It just looks dry.
  • DD's pedi told us to use alcohol and it took forever for it to fall off - close to a month.  This time around, we were told to do nothing and DS's fell off on day 9.

  • We haven't been doing anything to it. It had a little bit of blood on Sunday and I noticed today that it's only halfway attached. The one thing that the OB nurses, pedi, and our friend that's a 4th year med student emphasized was to NOT use alcohol. That's the old way of doing things, but they have figured out that alcohol doesn't actually dry it out, it instead kind of pickles it and makes it stay on longer.

  • We were told not to apply anything to it not even water. We left it alone and it fell off in 1 1/2 weeks. No bleeding, foul smell or anything.

  • We were told that alcohol was bad.  Just to clean it with a cottonball with water and then blow dry.  It fell off in 8 days.  We were also told that she could do regular baths right away.  I only did it once because I was scared to even though they said it was okay and the nurse at the hospital gave her a full bath her first day alive.

  • We were told that they don't recommend using alcohol anymore, unless the belly button looks infected or red. Now that the cord has fallen off, I am using alcohol to clean the area b/c it keeps bleeding a little.

  • We were told by our pedi not to do anything to it, just to fold down the top of the diaper so it doesn't rub against it, and to avoid submerging LO in the bath until it falls off.

It feel of cleanly when he was a little over a week old... no bleeding or issues.

  • The nurses and my midwife told me not to do anything to the umbilical cord. She said that a little bit of oozing was normal, but if there was any redness or bright red blood I had to call the GP immediately.
