I know I'm reaching but is there anything (even if it's not a med) that might help his cough? It interrupts his sleep multiple times a night (as I sit here at naptime and listen to him hock up a lung).
Yes, it's been running since the night we got them 5 weeks ago. :-( He was wheezing really bad from second hand smoke and his bed has been elevated since then too. We've also been using the vapor bath every other day for close to 2 weeks now. His cough just sounds awful and it seems to be getting worse rather than better.
I haven't tried Vicks because I thought you weren't allowed at his age??
Are you sure its not mild asthma caused by the second hand smoke? If it is more of a wheezing than a cough I would think that and if it is a cough that is lasting 5 weeks I might put a call into the pedi and see what they think. He might need some sort of breathing treatment at this point to get things back to normal. GL!

There is actually a baby version of Vicks available for babies over 3 months of age. It has a pink cap.
But I agree with Lauren, I'd be worried about a wheeze. Could be bronchiolitis, asthma, or another infection. I think I'd get it checked out if it's that bad and has been going on so long.
The wheeze has actually gone before the cough started. The cough has only been here for about 4-5 days now and has progressively gotten much worse. :-( I just feel so bad for him because it just literally shakes his whole body. We actually thought he had asthma because of the wheeze but with a steroid, it went away so the doctor ruled it out. He did a breathing treatment in the office and it did nothing for the wheezing so he said it was more than likely not asthma but ruled it out when it stopped completely. I'm gonna have to keep an eye on it though, he just got over a double ear infection. Doctor said his lungs sounded great just this past Friday but the cough has gotten much worse since then.
Re: 8 mos old and cough?
Run a cool mist humidifier in his room -- that will help more than you can imagine.
Also, you can use Vicks baby rub on his chest and back, and there is also a liquid vapor bath you can use to bathe him to loosen stuff up.
I can't think of any meds I would use for a baby that young.
