Cincinnati Babies

I'm in nap hell.

I typed out this post yesterday but deleted it.

I have been coming home after lunch lately and having zero success getting Nora to take an afternoon nap.

We started the Sleep Lady Shuffle 5 days ago at night and that's working pretty well.

She sleeps in the morning at the sitter but absolutely will not sleep for me in the afternoon. She only sleeps 8 hours at night and 1-2 in the morning, so I know she needs more sleep than she's getting.

I was doing the Sleep Lady Shuffle for naps, too, but after sitting by her crib for an hour at a time for the past few days, I can't take it anymore. Yesterday I walked out after 20 minutes and left her alone in there. After an hour and 15 minutes total, she still hadn't slept. Today she's been in there for 50 minutes. She's not really crying, just NOT sleeping. I checked on her once to replace her pacifier supply (she's got a couple in the crib so she can find one if she wants) and she's fine. She just WILL NOT SLEEP.

I am going to get blackout curtains for the windows, but otherwise I'm at a complete loss. Someone please get me a drink.

** Edit: We're now at 1 hour of no napping and she's full-on screaming. You can hear how tired she is. Whyyyy won't she sleep?

Re: I'm in nap hell.

  • Do you have white noise in the room with her? We put an air purifier in Lily's room that hums and we also play a lullaby cd that she sleeps too. We did those in addition to black out curtains b/c her room was so light during the day. I know a lot of people have the baby crack machine that plays white noise. HTH!

Yep, we have a white noise machine that plays ocean sounds. It plays at naptime and also bedtime.

  • Is she learning something new?  Sometimes when they learn to crawl or sit-up on their own, they seem to have a hard time settling themselves down to sleep.

How long is she awake in between naps?  Maybe it needs to be lengthened, so she is more tired?  Or shortened, if she is over-tired?

Good luck.  Hopefully it is just a stage!  When C was that age she still slept in a swing for naps - we broke that around 9 months.  And I do remember a short stage where I could only get her to fall asleep in our bed next to me with her sea horse and surrounded by pillows...

She isn't learning anything new right now - she got 2 teeth about a month ago and she isn't yet crawling or sitting up.

That's the hard part - it's never the same time in between naps. I think she might be overtired. This is definitely something I need to get more strict about - figuring out her morning schedule more precisely so I can make sure it isn't more than 3 hours since she got up from her morning nap.

    Thanks :)

Even the seahorse in the bed with me isn't working! She just rolls around endlessly.

How can a baby not like to sleep?? Sleeping is the best!

  • Do you swaddle her during the day?  I know they say not to swaddle past a certain number of hours, but I say do what works - Lila gets swaddled for nighttime sleep and daytime naps.  She needs it.  It doesn't seem to be causing her any problems and she's getting plenty of movement during the day.  We keep our nap routine similar to our nighttime routine which is change, swaddle, nurse, bink and then I put her down and turn the fan on.

I think the blackout curtains might really help too.  We have them in all our bedrooms and they have been a great investment.  In fact, Ava still naps well at 3.5, which I think might be rare in itself, but home is the only place she will nap and I'm sure it's because of the blackout curtains.

  • I will also add that when we do our nap and nighttime routine, she is nearly asleep or all the way asleep after the nursing part of the routine.  I'm not putting her down awake.  I'm not ready to put her down awake, and even at Nora's age, I was never really able to put the other girls down awake and have them fall asleep on their own.  I know some people feel strongly about doing it this way, but my girls just wouldn't do it until closer to a year.  Until then, I rocked them and put them down asleep.
