So I am a lazy asthmatic. Really out of shape. I want to get fit, and I think I might want to try running. I'm not going for any half-marathons or anything, but I want to at least get to feeling and looking better. Is there any hope for me?
Are there any good resources you can recommend for a beginner? Any good websites, books, blogs, etc.? Any gear/shoes you're especially fond of?
Thanks for your insight!
Re: Hecky, other runners, please come in!
I have never used it myself, but a lot of my friends have done the Couch to 5k program and really liked it!
I was going to suggest this. I like this program, it got me back in shape after I broke my collarbone.

I took up with my husband's running group. I really dig running with other people, it helps keep me motivated. Check out any running stores in your area; chances are they host several different groups that you may have to pay for and a couple of runs / week that are free and you just get to enjoy some company.
In terms of shoes & gear, that's all really personal preference and what ends up fitting you best! Your running store will be the best place to get fitted for proper shoes which IMO are a must if you want to be comfortable and avoid injury at any distance.
Good luck! Running is awesome and when I took it up I wasn't sure I was going to be reaching any kind of goal, but I ended up running a half marathon my first year out and it was a totally amazing feeling.
I love to run!
Do you have a running stroller? I have a Baby Trend running stroller and it stinks so I am going to get a BOB at some point. If you run with the stroller it seems to give (for me at least) a better work out because I can almost always run twice and far and faster when I am not pushing it. LO likes it when I run too.
Also, I second the PP who said check out a running store. They can help you find out what shoes will work best for you to avoid injury and having a group or at least a partner will keep you motivated. I take a stroller class three days a week where we run (or power walk) with calisthenics and strength training at various stops along the route. Perhaps you have something like that in your area? Ours is called "Stroller Strides" It's a great way to meet other mamas too!
Wow, this is lots of great information--thank you all so much!
I had no idea running stores even existed until I read your comments. LOL! I looked one up near my house, and I plan to go check it out this weekend.
I think I'm also going to try that Couch-to-5K program. It sounds perfect for a beginner like me. I might also look into those stroller classes (I do have a Baby Jogger stroller with locking front wheels, so hopefully I'm all set in that department).
I'm so excited to finally get in shape!
Couch to 5K is. awesome.
It turned my run-hating butt into a believer.
I am encouraged, indeed! I have always admired (and been jealous of) runners, wondering how and why they do what they do. I hope to be among them soon.
