We've Got a Crawler! Please rec your baby gates!

The little dude finally figured it out last weekend, and has been off to the races ever since. We need baby gates in a big way! Does anyone have recommendations? We're going to need two of them to block off the living room, and definitely want one of them to be walk through since I'm clumsy and shouldn't be stepping over it all the time.

Our babies sure grow up fast!

Thanks ladies!

Edit: Bonus points if you've got extra wide doorways.

  • We have this one and I really like it. It was important to me for the gate to swing open  both ways.

We got Dream Baby ones as well and like them.  I found Amazon had the best pricing even factoring in coupons from BRU plus the free 2 day shipping was nice. :)

Ours is similar. I ilke that the wood ones feel like they have a little more substance to them. The metal ones feel so flimsy to me. I also like that it blends with my home decor and doesn't scream ugly baby gate. W isn't mobile, but we use ours to keep the dufus dogs out of certain areas and they haven't crashed it over despite running into it very hard.

  • Yay Lucas!  I'm saving this thread since we're not far behind in this department.  Happy babyproofing! :)
  • We love our Kidco gates!  https://www.kidco.com/main.taf?p=1  Can be found at Merri-go-round in Bellevue, BRU & Amazon.

  • We have a couple of  The First Years Hands Free and Regalo Easy Step Walk Thru. Both have extenders. We have wide doorways (42" & 51") I like the First Years because I can have my hands full but the Regalo is going to be safer because my DD probably won't figure out how to open it. GL!  Oh! I have 2 coupons for 20% off at BRU if you want. Smile

  • We have this one and you can buy extra add ons to make it wider.  We have it at the bottom of our stairs and in a doorway.  I got one for $20 at a consignment store.

We also have two of these in really weird places upstairs.  If you need something that's configurable, this works.

Way to go cutie pie. Crawling is so fun, but it's a lot of extra work for mama and daddy!

I have no recs, as we just block off the bathroom so that we can keep the door open all the time (stupid old Seattle area buildings and mold).

  • My baby is a crawler.  He is picking up his little tush a little bit more and crawling over to me in my direction, and then he will sprawl everywhere.

My kid has a tendency to bonk into things-wood furniture, and then he cries.  He puts everything in his mouth.  He reaches for the DVDs and pulls them out.  He just love to play on the floor though.  So I think a plastic play zone will work better for our apartment.  Our inlaws told us that they would buy us one-play yard or something else.

  • I would not recommend a thing like that. There's not much room in there. And you're going to need to hang out in there with the kid. And once they actually crawl, they want to get to move. So I think they might be happy with that for a month. And you're going to need to baby proof anyway because they can't stay in that area all day. Especially once they walk.

  • we got two that swing wide open.  It is Evenflo secure gate.  I love them. You do need to drill into the wall though.  We tried a tension - but being pregnant and carrying a newborn - well, that was recipe for disaster!

  • We have a combination of gates.  At the top of the stairs there is a gate that has a door that swings open.

We also have two sections of those play yard fence units (the plain gray ones you see in a hexagon type shape).  We essentially run it along a wall of dangers: entertainment center, wood stove, old china cabinet and across the dining room (where the dog food is).  To keep it in place DH has installed caribiners since the kids get smart and know how to use it.

There was a brief period when Jillian had just turned 2 and Hayden was not yet mobile when we didn't need any gates or fences.  But when the crawling began the security system went back up.  Another year and maybe it can come down for good.

Just wanted to comment that we have a Playzone and it's AWESOME.  Ours is larger though (there are extra sections) and it's really configurable.  It works great in our living room and there is a TON of space to play around in.  We can move it around to give it even more space when we want to (like when I host my PEPS group).  We've been using it since she started crawling at 9 months and it's been really versatile

Yeah that is much bigger than the original picture posted.   You still will have to baby proof other areas though - she can't possibly just stay in there all the time can she?   My kids would go berserk.  They run laps around the entire house ALL.DAY.LONG.  Cooper would flip if he were confined to that area.   And I guess my philosophy is that the house is theirs too, so I've made the house accessible to them.  Some things are inconvenient, like having to put barriers in front of the xbox or taking handles off of some cabinets, but then they have access to the house.  We only have gated areas that are dangerous - like the stairs, or the doorway into DH's office - too many cords, a paper shredder, etc...

Whatever works though - if that works for you guys, that's great.  I just don't see that as a very long term solution.  But that might just be because I have crazy active boys.

  • Well, in our case, our daughter is still crawling and not walking yet...so I imagine once she starts walking, this playzone won't work...but for now, between the time they crawl and walk, it's a great piece of equipment.

We were able to borrow this from a neighbor so we didn't have to weigh whether or not it's worth the cost of purchasing.

  • Ahhhhh there's the difference. Both of my kids only crawled for about a month before they walked. My kids are maniacs!
