To eat or not to eat??

Ok so I am getting mixed answers... is sea food ok to eat during my first trimester.. or at all?

I was told no shellfish, or fish in general cause of the mercury and something else.

Then I read that fish and shell fish are full of iron and is GOOD to eat.

Help cause I love seafood :)

Re: To eat or not to eat??

  • I was told no shell fish and like 6 ozs of tuna a week was okay.  I was also told some other kinds of fish to not eat, but Salmon was okay.  I threw away my paper on the good fish to eat that my OB gave me.

  • My OB said that if you can't pronounce it or if the name doesn't sound familiar, then don't eat it.  And that eating fish (tilapia, pollock, cod, catfish) once a week is good for you and LO.  (I had just asked her if I could eat tuna fish sandwiches.)  And since she's been through this twice herself, I think I'll go with her advice.

  • I asked my doctor about this and she agreed with the information that I found.

Here's some helpful information from WebMD ...

Eating two servings of fish per week can be healthy for mom and baby. Coldwater fish in particular contains lots of omega-3 fatty acids, which help with your baby's brain development and vision.

You should try to avoid fish high in mercury, such as swordfish, shark, tilefish, and king mackerel, Chescheir says. Salmon, shrimp, and canned light tuna are better choices.

You'd be smart to skip the raw fish, too, including sushi or sashimi, according to ACOG. Raw fish is more likely than cooked fish to contain parasites and bacteria. It's fine, however, to eat cooked sushi.
