I'm thinking ahead to the end of the school year. What would be an appropriate gift for a preschool teacher? She's really been wonderful and I'd love to get her something that she would really like.
Costco has some really cute shawls on sale online if you have a membership! I bought them as hostess gift for the people who are throwing my baby shower. They are normally $30, but on sale for $20!
My mom is a teacher and she always got a lot of stuff, some of which wasn't her style or was duplicates, etc. I always recommend a gift card to someplace like Starbucks, Barnes and Noble or Target. A card with a note from you about how much you've appreciated her and anything specific you really have liked is also nice, I know I loved thoughtful notes like that from families I nannied for.
I polled my friends about this last year and the ones who are/were teachers all said gift cards. They don't really want more "stuff" - I can see that - it has got to really accumulate when you have so many kids every year.
I was thinking of getting M's teachers todays groupon for Frost. They all have families and I thought it might be a fun treat for them to do over the summer. GC are good, although as someone who isn't a fan of sbuxs I would say Target, pedicure would go over better.

Do you know any of the other moms/families? My favorite gift was when all the moms got together and chipped into to get me a gift card to InSpa for one service. It was AWESOME to have gift that pampered me. It is too expensive a gift for just one family to do, but going in on it with other moms makes it more doable.
I also always loved Starbucks and Barnes and Noble gift cards.

I was a special ed teacher for 9 years, and my gosh no mugs or other clutter. Starbucks gift cards, a spa card, even just for a pedicure are fabulous. I plan on InSpa cards for daycare when the kids switch rooms... (I did do mugs (yikes) for christmas with some really nice chocolates and a SB card in them .. but our teacher was saying she had broken or lost her mug, so it made sense)
a couple favorite books for the classroom, with an inscription or a GC to lakeshore (but thats more classroom than teacher, but she could improve her own supplies/curriculum resources there too)
But really, Im with katie, if you know other parents, pool 20 a head for a fabulous pamper day at gene jaurez or something... decadent that she would never do. (I never would have as a newer teacher)
I've seen classes have every child make a quilt square and a parent assemble a quilt too... Is there a room parent?

My sister is a teacher & she says the gifts she appreciates most are gift cards (restaurants, Starbucks, InSpa, Barnes & Noble) with a note. She's saved notes from some of her favorite students & parents & keeps them in a keepsake box. When she's having a rough teaching day, she likes to re-read the notes & remind her why she loves teaching.
I know it sounds impersonal, but honestly, I love the gift cards: Starbucks, Target, Barnes and Noble. I use the Barnes and Noble gift cards for books for my classroom. I know some teachers even got Nordstom gift cards and I was always jealous!
Of course the thought always counts, but I really don't need perfume, chocolate, or post it notes.
Re: teacher gifts?
How about a nice scarf (fashion not cold weather), or a broach, or something for her home. Or a plant in a cute pot with E's hand prints on it,
