Going rate for babysitters?

I know this has been asked before, but what is the going rate for babysitters?  I have one child (and my dog would be here as well).  The caregiver I am interviewing is in her early 20s with over 5 years of experience.  I was thinking $12/hr.  Too much? Too little?  Thanks!

  • We pay our mid-20s babysitters $12.

We also pay $12 for 2 kids. While I think $10 is reasonable for one, I think you also can't be too generous with someone who cares for your child and your home while you are out. Paying well also helps create a long term relationship and can give you priority when other families want the same date.

  • Thanks for the info ladies.  I am thinking $12 is fair.  I just wanted to make sure I wasn't too far off base since I've never done this before :)
  • I pay $12-$15 an hour depending on how much wine I had while I was out.  We pay the high schooler down the street $10 an hour.  She's 16.
