Trying to Get Pregnant

If/when you get a BFP - then what?

Do you schedule an appt right away to have the doc do a test?  Or are the home tests totally reliable?

I guess I'm asking, when should you make your first appt?  I know little/nothing about this, but I can imagine that if/when I get a BFP, I'll want verbal confirmation from the mouth of a professional - is that unrealistic?

  • My doc says that HPTs are more than reliable so there's no need for a bloodtest, that being said she'll order a blood test for me if I want! However if it's all positive she said my first appt wouldn't be until I was 8 weeks.

  • I plan to call my doc right away and tell them I got a BFP and see what they recommend.

Some doc's will only schedule you after 7 weeks.... so you may have a while to wait for that first appointment unless you are high risk from some other health related issues...

  • Because I have a thyroid condition, I would imagine that they will want to test my TSH as soon as I find out I am pregnant...thats a blood test, so I'd probably have them throw in a blood pregnancy test too.

Good point.  I have hypothyroidism too.  I can't imagine waiting 8 weeks to see a doctor.  I have a MILLION questions!

  • I called the doctor immediately after finding out both times. They ordered blood tests, before I even meet with my Doctor.  They are seeing me when I'm about 9 weeks pregnant. I'm not sure if its the same everywhere, but that's how its gone for me.

  • For BFP #1 I didn't have my appointment till I was about 8 weeks along. That is common.

BFP #2 My appointment was around 6 weeks as I was having some bleeding.  It ended up being ectopic.

BFP #3 Since I just had an ectopic, I was told to call as SOON as I got my BFP. I did that and went in for bloodwork.  Bloodwork showed it was a chemical pregnancy. I never saw my dr. just spoke via phone.

  • Call and make an appt. Each dr is different. My office doesn't have you come in until about 9 weeks for an exam and dating u/s

  • With my provided (Kaiser) they make you come in to test/confirm it and then they schedule you for your first apointment (which isn't really an apointment it's more like a class). During  that they tell you how far along you should be, schedule your next apointment (would be somewhere between 8-10 weeks for the ultra sound), take blood, etc, then give you a suggested diet to follow.

  • With DS#1 my first appointment was scheduled at 8 weeks.

With my second BFP I was scheduled at 8 weeks again but I started bleeding and it ended in a c/p.

Once I get a BFP this time I was told to call immediately for bloodwork to check my progesterone.

If you have no history of m/c then I think they will probably want to see you at 8 weeks.  If you have questions the OB's nurse will be able to just speak with you over the phone.  Good luck!

  • When I get my next BFP I will immediately call my RE.  They will be monitoring me for several weeks, quite aggressively due to a couple of early losses.

When I got my first BFP I called my RE, went & had my betas drawn & as soon as I had my first results I called my OB.  I was seen 2-weeks later, but only because I was a new patient for them & they wanted a pap on file.  My OB's office only does urine tests (they do not check betas or P4) & they normally don't see you until around 8-weeks.

start reading pregnancy books - there is no harm in being well informed before conception.

  • My doctor told me to come in right after getting my BFP and they would confirm the pregnancy. She also told me that, depending on when LO was conceived, they may be able to do a vaginal ultrasound.
