Babies on the Brain

Do you ever get scared on your own?

We have someone coming today to estimate how much stuff we have to move back east. DH scheduled it for today because I'm off, be he's at work. It's broad daylight, we live in a very active apartment complex, and yet somehow there's a voice in the back of my head that says I don't like that a strange guy will be in my house with me alone.

Weird.

  • You should be fine for something like that. I get creeped out if it's someone coming to buy something I listed on Craigslist. I usually try to not have people come over unless DH is home but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

  • I'd be a bit anxious.  I'd never set my cell phone down the entire time the person is in the house but that's me being crazy.

  • Satellite puppy* will be going apeshiit as soon as the guy knocks on the door.

I can never tell if he's yelling "GET OUT! GET OUT! GET OUT OF MY HOUSE OR VENGEANCE WILL BE MINE!"

Or "I LOOK PRETTY! WANNA PLAY BALL? MY BALL IS IN THE OTHER ROOM AND THERE ARE TREATS ON THE COUNTER IF YOU WANT SOME. I'M PRETTY!"

And yeah, there should be no problem whatsoever, it's more that I think it's weird that I even have this thought to begin with. I never used to think of things as being potentially dangerous.

*Riley is still wearing the cone of shame, and has thus been referred to as SP. Also, I've been singing Dave Matthews Satellite continuously for the past 3 days.

  • Our building is owned by the cutest, sweetest little old man. A couple months ago he had to come into the apartments to check the fire alarms (they do that a couple times a year). It was him and a fireman, and I was so paranoid. It seriously took all of 5 minutes and I spent the whole time holding Gonzo.

  • I hate it!  I am often the one who has to stay home for things like this because it's easier for me to get time off and i work closer to home.

  • It's so funny that you say this. DH is on a business trip and i've been scared of my own shadow. To the point where I'll turn the TV on to get in the shower for background noise and then freak myself out because I'm wondering who is talking. Lol.

  • If anything I don't worry enough about things like that.  I take safety precautions when people come on service calls, like staying on the phone with someone the entire time (even if the phone is just on and sitting in my pocket or my hand with a friend on the other line), and telling the neighbors to come check on me if they haven't seen or heard from me after X minutes.  If it's someone from Craigslist I make sure to have whatever I'm getting rid of near the open garage door and I meet them outside before they can even get to the front door, and things like that.  But I don't really worry about it much, I guess because I'm used to handling things like that alone.
  • I got pissssed at H last week when he sent someone from Craigs List to our house when I was home alone to look at our lawn mower. He called twice during the 30 min to make sure I was OK, but I was still not thrilled about it.  I should also add that the guy that came was a sweet old man and his wife. So yeah, even though my threat level was probably -3, I was still worried.

When DH is out in the middle of the night on a death call, I use to get up and clean or something until he got home.  I've calmed down a little bit in that, I stay in bed with the light on in the stairwell and our bedroom door open (Our bedroom is right next to the door coming in from the outside steps)  and Rufus lays right up against my belly but stares out our bedroom door until DH gets home.

I live in a funeral home for crying out loud its not like people break in to them very often but, I'm still a wreck with stuff like that.

  • I am wary of everyone.  When we had DirecTV installed at our house, Andrew was at work and when the guy pulled up he looked totally sketchy.  I shoved my 9mm between the couch cushions where I was sitting reading a book while he worked.

  • Not for things like that. I do make sure DH knows who is coming over and when, but I don't mind being alone at home for that.

Being alone at home overnight? That freaks me out. I check under beds & in all the closets before going to bed.

  • I'm really weird. When I'm home alone, especially at night I'm super paranoid. Door locked, blinds closed. I've always been like that, and now I live in an apartment in a sketchy area so it's even worse.

The weird part is when I'm at someone else's house, babysitting or whatever I'm alot less scared. No idea why though.

I have no idea actually. I have the guys name, but not the company - DH took the paper he wrote it on with him today!

We're just getting quotes right now, want me to call your company too? :) I'm so excited not to be uhauling this time!!! We rented our furniture, so it's not too bad... but more than I want to do!!

  • Nope.  Never.  Even living on my own with people coming to buy stuff I put on CL.  In the apartment too.  I even answer the door not expecting anyone during the day.

Maybe that makes me a moron.  Probably does.  It never occurs to me that someone might be there to create another episode of the forensic files.

I am like this most of the time.   We live in a quiet neighborhood and I sometimes go for walks at alone at night too. I think you can be careful without being paranoid.

I do however get scared sometimes at night if DH isn't home.

  • In NY I had zero worries. I walked Riley at night, by myself, no problem. I wasn't stupid, I know people still get mugged in NY, but I always felt safe. And I feel safe here too, I don't know why I even thought twice about it. Weird. Maybe I'm getting older and paranoid.

There was one news article I read last year about a guy getting stabbed in Queens after trying to help a lady who was being assaulted.  He was laying there on the sidewalk and people just walked past him for over an hour.  I'm not sure I could feel safe on my own in a place where (it seems) no one is looking out for one another.

I know it doesn't happen everyday, and this may have just been a particularly bad area or something, but from the outside looking in, it's not somewhere I'd ever want to live.

  • Yes, stuff like that happens. But not frequently. I would say that after moving to NY I was shocked at how "small town" NY is. I constantly see people going out of their way to help others. Like, a couple asking for directions may get directions to what they were asking, but also a recommendation on a better place to go, see or eat. When I was on crutches and took the subway, 5 people would jump up and offer their seat.

Of course, it's not always like that either... Perfectly imperfect. If you ever decide to come to NY, I'll show you a city that you'll love!

I definitely would love to do the touristy thing there one day, but I'm not sure I'm cut out to live in a CITY city.  :o)

And you've got a deal.  There's talk of a girls' trip to NYC for my niece's senior trip next year.
