THANKS a lot bump.com

I just got the "5 OTC meds to take - and ones to toss" email.  I know that we aren't suposed to take anything aside from Tylenol NOW, but the day or two before I found out i was PG, i took Advil several times over the course of 12 hrs for a fever...Ughh I can't wait for our anatomy scan hoping to see a healthy baby!!!

Medications in the NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) class, including ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) may be associated with congenital heart defects, specifically septal defects, when taken during the first trimester.

Anyone else??

  • If you took them before you found out you were pregnant then there is nothing you can do about it. No point in worrying yourself.

  • While I was pregnant and didn't know it I took advil, drank for the holidays and new years and took antibiotics.  My doctor said it is all fine and since the baby really isn't feeding off you at such an early stage, not to worry.  I have heard the hb three times, had two perfect ultrasounds and all my bloodwork was great.  No worries.

    Thanks this helps a bunch!

  • I totally agree with what the PP said.

I, too, drank over the holidays and took nyquil and a fair bit of advil for severe aches (climbed up and down a couple thousand steps in Egypt over New Years!), all before I knew I was pregnant.  I mentioned this to my midwife and she was unconcerned.  Think of how many people every year get pregnant and don't have any idea until they miss a period.  The vast majority of those babies are fine.  Unless you have reason to worry due to a specific test I would try to let go of your fears and just focus on avoiding things that can harm the baby going forward.

  • My dr assured me that the first few weeks the baby is not "really a baby yet" and certainly not on your blood supply yet, so anything you did way early wouldn't have any effect on the baby.

  • I think a lot about the things I did before I knew I was pregnant.  I know I drank a few times but even bigger than that I was preparing for trip to Honduras (in the brush not in a tourist town) and had to get a Hepitits A shot, Thypoid shot, and I even took one of my malria meds before realizing I was pregnant.  The shots I took are all inactive but just the thought is scary and I was very upset with myself and the timing of everything.  I found out 4 days before I was supposed to fly out.  I hate thinking about it but there is nothing I can do about it now. I have my anatomy scan on Thursday and I am more nervous than excited knowing that this will be when we can tell if anything is wrong until actual birth.

This is good to know. I had been wondering - why did the nurse and doctor so seriously warn me about drinking, advil, etc., then they were so unconcerned when I told her about having drinks the first few weeks before I knew.
