What do you do to cope with stress?

I need some new ideas. My go-to stress busters aren't working any more.

Re: What do you do to cope with stress?

  • Did you ever end up trying yoga? Exercise and vodka are my go-tos.

  • I have to have alone time - lately it is the only thing that works for me. Even if it means DH takes LO outside for a half an hour so I can fold laundry in peace and quiet.

My biggest complaint is I am never alone. At work I have people next to me all day long, at home DH and LO are always there, in bed DH is always there. Heck, usually when I pee someone else is in the restroom too, either at work or at home.

  • Exercise, drink, bubble bath, sleep in til noon, GNO

Some people do yoga or meditate. Have you done progressive muscle relaxation? I would do that every night when I was going through my super stressful periods.

  • I clean or exercise to feel better. I'd also rather be alone when I'm super-stressed and try to read a good book (I mean something that's totally going to take my mind off stuff).

Sometimes I pick some sort of *project* and then focus on that...just any sort of distraction...whether it be finding new clothes for the kids, decorating a room in the house, organizing a closet, etc.

  • Lately what helps me is to listen to music with a heavy bass beat. For some reason it calms me down. :) Lots of rap.

  • I get plowed.

Also, ironing helps clear my head. So strange, I know.

  • I drink. It's certainly not what I'd recommend as a stress-buster if you are seriously stressed every day, but for every now and then, I like a cold beer to calm me down and help me just sit and relax for a bit.

I also try to get some alone time every day, as someone mentioned. DH is one of those people who never needs alone time and hates being alone, so he doesn't get it, so I often take a "bathroom break" after dinner and then I just hang out on the edge of the tub and read for 20 minutes. Works like a charm and no one ever tries to come in :).

I'd also recommend exercise. I don't exercise right now because I'm super-lazy in the winter, but I always found that exercise helped me calm down when I was at my most high-strung.

    Snicker.

I definitely drink too.  My drinks of choice right now are Blueberry Martinis or Captain Morgan Private Stock and coke zero.

I will also take walks, or ride a bike.  Or talk to my therapist Big Smile

    HA! This is definitely me.

  • I'm not one to exercise, really, and I'm not much of a drinker.

But I have found just getting outside, in fresh air, helps immensely.  One day last summer, I was overflowing to the brim and I just went outside on the front porch to sit for about 20 minutes.  I took a book out there, but I only read it for a few minutes.  Just being outside with MYSELF was a godsend.

Now on bad days, I'll take the kids and run somewhere, and if I can go without them, all the better.  Shop, go get coffee, sit under a tree, go for a short walk.  And I love taking naps with my cat when I can catch them -- animals are therapeutic too.

    Loud music

Take a walk by myself in our yard

Chopping vegetables, especially onions (strange, I know)

    Beer

Put on a fun, sexy outfit and makeup just for the heck of it

Go for a country drive and intentionally try to get lost

  • I'm a big fan of yoga and meditation but I like doing it in a group setting so it's not as often as I'd like. There is a really cool place here in Lebanon called, Elemental Om that you should check out. Plus, we just re-joined the Y so if you ever want to do a yoga class there, I would love to meet you there!

  • I like to go for long drives and listen to loud music (usually bad religion, reminds me of more carefree times :)
  • I don't 'get plowed' per se, but I plow through a crapload of work.  I stay at school after most have left and get ahead there.  For some reason, that calms me down.  For some reason, I get stress relief when I reduce my 'to do' list

I go grocery shopping.  Very strange, yes, but it does calm me down (provided I'm by myself)

    Sleep

Playing mindless games on the Internet/computer

    exercise

    Drinking

    Cursing

    Play with DS

Watch guilty pleasure TV (ANTM and other girly shows)

Call family members I haven't talked to in a while and want to talk to

And cleaning.. I think it has something to do with seeing part of my life in order.
